    I very dimly recall reading decades ago that Jeffreys and Lou Reed were actually roommates at some point.

    I believe they were at college together and have definitely featured on various of each other's albums. There is some influence but Jeffreys sounds more like Willy DeVille than anyone else. I have now discovered that The Rumour are his backing band on Rock & Roll Adult - 1983 Live album.
