While there were definitely earlier digital recordings released, most were the functional equivalent of direct-to-disc, or used analogue processes in the mixing, prior to creation of analog masters and lps. Of course, actual digital playback systems (i.e. CDs) were yet to be produced/marketed.

He has this to say about the Cooder recording:

"The first all-digital album made in the traditional multi-track way used for most popular/rock/jazz albums since the 1960s was Ry Cooder's "Bop 'Ti1 You Drop," released by Warner Brothers in 1979. The album, produced by Cooder and engineered by Lee Herschberg, was recorded at Warner Brothers' North Hollywood studio in California".

The album suffers from the limitations of that early version of the tecnology, and Cooder never liked the result.

It's been interesting to re-read the article, very well done and very thorough. A total music/technology geek-fest.

Good read, thanks Ron. It seems to really be what ones definition of a digital recording actually is in determining what WAS the first digital recording. There is first commercial digital recording, first compact disc, first only digital stages used to record and mix but released analog, first only digital staged used to record and mix released in digital format, first digital recording but analog mixed and released, and so on.

Interesting read about first digital album. Thanks Ron.

Michaelĺs Spotty plug-in has inspired me to generate my own Spotify playlist this evening. This is a first rough draft. It needs lengthening and refining a bit.

I've been playing a lot of Joy Division lately, particularly their two studio albums Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980), both my original copies bought on release. A few years later a burglary meant my precious LP collection spent some months in police custody, so I bought second copies of both LPs to keep me going - so I have two copies of each. Actually I've been playing copies of these ripped from vinyl for that added period authenticity.
