re-joining split files, how to?

some issues:

1. i have some mp3s and FLACs, single songs, that are split in two. this sucks obviously. i (barely) know how to import them into audacity and "re-join" or "conjoin" them, but that process transcodes them to wav and then i have to re-save them as mp3 or flac or whatever, (bad for mp3 quality anyway) and i lose the tags.

is there a utility that will just put them together?

2. i have some FLACs that are whole albums, single file. some have cue sheets, but not all. how do i split either kind out into individual files?

also, how do i make gapless CDs?

flac files with cuesheets can be easily split using foobar 2k...

mp3cat will split mp3's apart
mp3wrap will put them back together.

Doesn't seem to be a Windows version of mp3cat (the windows program of the same name does something entirely different). There is a windows port of mp3wrap. Neither converts the data, splitting/joining on frame boundaries.

Rejoining in a lossless manner with MP3 is possible, but no one ever wrote a program to do this AFAIK. You should always keep the original MP3 if you need to split it.

i had a few mp3 songs split in two, and it rejoined them seamlessly. i expected to hear a pop or SOME kind of yuk nonsense at the join point, but i never did! all the joins seem to be audibly perfect. i did however run "mp3val" on them afterward.

however...

You will lose your tags: clearly if you have 10 flac files, merging the tags from all 10 flacs into one makes no sense. The tracks in virtually all cases will have different TITLE's, and perhaps different ARTISTS... which would be retained? Track 1? Track 10?

It can generate a cue sheet, though....

You would need cue sheets, however.... you could perhaps make simulated ones from freedb data, though the timing won't be perfect.

thx, i'll check that out... but just fyi, i have some single song flacs, that were mistakenly split in two.

in other words, a single song, single flac file, has in a few cases, been split in two, and i need it remerged. therefore the two pieces would share the same tag info.

i don't know how technically tags work in flacs, but in mp3s v1 tags go in the back of the file, v2 go in front, (i think, or vice versa), and when you merge/join them, usually at least one of them, or both, work and retain the info for the new merged file.

so i was hoping the same would be true for flacs. but if not, i guess i can just manually fix em. i'll report back about shntool, excited to try it...

Foobar:

1. Load the flac files into Foobar.
2. Select the ones you want to merge.
3. Right-click and select "Convert ..."
4. Select Output Format = FLAC, Destination = Merge all tracks into one output file.
