I have been following this thread since a while and I'm just wondering if there is any progress in the search for the replacement speakers ?

I have 3 booms and I'm worried about Logitech dropping the whole Squeezebox line since there is nothing new coming out..... So when my Booms (if) start to fail I would like to be able to replace the speakers....

The Boom has been out of production for a while now, and nobody has indicated that Logitech has fixed a single one. So their dropping the Squeezebox product line would have little to do with getting them repaired or even of being able to buy a replacement driver from them.

    Hi all,
I managed to repair my split boom speaker surround with some silicone..
see here for details & link to pics:

You've got nothing to lose by giving this a go, since there doesn't seem to be any replacement speakers available. And it should extend the life of your boom for a bit longer...

Could this be from how they are being driven? As in over 80 in volume or material that is highly distorted in the first place? According to discussions with Caleb, the Boom's DSP starts rolling off bass drive at about 75 and above to protect the drivers.

My first Beta has years of use on it in the volume range of 50 to 75 as well as all the testing before the final DSP curves were put in place, IOW its been through the wringer and is still going strong.

Do we have any blown surrounds from somebody that can honestly say their Boom has never seen the north side of 60 on the Volume scale?
If the DSP code reacts to the volume number rather than the amount of power actually being sent to the drivers then it may it have been tricked by modern music mastering techniques? Over time music has been mastered to sound louder at the same volume setting.

If so there may be a difference between playing music with replay gain enabled and disabled (assuming the files have this info in them in the first place).

Waaah..., came back from vacation and one of my Booms has the broken woofer problem :-( This is the one I bought right after they came out in 2008. I really hope my other one (that is newer, but mostly outside) won't fail on me...

Looking through older posts, it was mentioned that the Boom has the same woofer as the Logitech Z-10 (which is also discontinued). Has anyone tried to use those woofers, or figured out a part number for that?

Also, through another post I stumbled upon these 'newfoam' kits: http://www.newfoam.com/kits.asp Has anyone tried those to fix there boom?

    Thanks,

I got lucky yesterday and bought some used Audioengine A5 speakers at a local pawn shop for $120. I hooked them up to my Boom and all I can say is WOW! These speakers are fantastic. They sound a lot better than the Boom speakers. I don't know if I would pay $400 for a brand new pair, but finding some used ones might be an option for those of you that have bad speakers. They also turn off the boom speakers when you plug in the external speakers, so I can extend the life of my built in speakers since they are still good. I also have a set of KRK Rokit 5's and the A5's sound a lot better than those. The highs are a lot better on the A5's.

A5's are amazing, both new and older models. New models are $399 MSRP, the old model like you got were $349 MSRP but could be purchased regularly at $299, sometimes as low as $249 new.

    Possible Driver Replacement

I have replaced my stock drivers (entirely separated all along the edge, as discussed throughout this thread…) with the Parts Express Dayton Audio ND91-4 drivers. These drivers are very close to the size of the stock drivers. Specs aren’t quite as good, on paper.

Reconstruction Details: The frame of the new driver is just a little too big at two points and the screw holes don’t quite line up. A Roto Tool shaving type bit was used to “ease” the aluminum frame of the speaker adjacent to the Tweeter mounting and slightly at the next corner. Also, the holes for the screws were “elongated” radially toward the center of the speaker, about 3/32”. That’s it! Very simple, and it’s obvious what needs to be done when you hold the driver in place to try to fit it in.

Why did I try this: My second Boom, Shaboom, now has a small separation on one driver, more to come, I’m sure. Booms seem to be selling for about $200 on ebay…., so I thought that I would try this on the SB Boom, my first Boom that failed dramatically, with both drivers entirely separated.

How’s it sound?? Pretty good, but not perfect. BUT, the new drivers do not go, “Cha-chung, cha-chung", etc,. as do the broken Logitech drivers!! However, after adjusting the Bass and Treble, I am initially very satisfied. I would say at first hearing, the ‘presence’ is not quite as good as the original boom and not as good as my SoundBridge R1000 radios. However, after some adjustments of B & T, to my taste, I am feeling fine with the result.

So far, I am glad that I spent the time and money to do this. Questions, Comments??

Comment: thank you for posting this information. I now rely on three Booms in our house and would hate to lose even one to this problem.

I wonder if this means I'll be buying a few of these DA drivers to stockpile, next to the spare SB2/SB3 wifi card I bought off ebay years ago...!

Why won't my stereo boom box work?
So basically, it was connected to my compuer through a cable.

It was in the "input" port in the boom box. It is connected to my computer head phones area. Anyways, I was listening to it yesterday and it was fine.

Then I turn it on today, and I hear a big "pop" and now the left and right stereos don't work. I don't know how speakers are made, but I have a left and a right speaker, both with a top and bottom part to them. The top is a small hole with sound coming out on both speakers. However, the bottom part, where the noise is made loudest doesn't work at all. No sound at all is coming out of the bottom at all. And it is that way with both speakers.
