I just started SBS on my work laptop, on which SBS hasn't been running for a long time. I was prepared to update, the running version is 7.4.2r30215. To my surprise, the SBS control panel claims that "There is no updated Squeezebox Server version available". Does this make sense?
The workings of the SB line-up continuously surprise me, when it doesn't downright frigg me off...

I'd check for proper settings in SBS > Settings > Advanced > Software Updates

Then just uninstall the current version, keep Prefs & Settings when asked, download and install new SBS version.

Yeah, sure, right, thanks... already done that. My "issue" was that the SB-software, all of it as it seems, has so many quirks and oddities... even simple things like automatically checking for updates doesn't work, you (at least me) wonder how on earth a company like Logitech can produce such gibbery code... From Adobe I've already come to expect it, but I though these Logitechies were of a different kind. My Duet system and SBS has made me realize otherwise...

Oh, sorry, I thought you actually needed help in getting SBS updated when you really just wanted to vent.

Yes, bad software... for some reason when it hasn't been running "for a long time" it doesn't know what has updated around it.
I have a Windows machine that hasn't run for a couple years: it hasn't told me about updates either! Atrocious! Of course, I expect such sloppy code from Microsoft! Who cares if the machine has no power or network connection! It should check for updates!
Software that isn't running should always know when there are updates, and they should check for updates CONSTANTLY, not once a day.

Hilarious post.
But way off track.
As the OP said, he started up the software. What part of that says 'not running?' And check for updates was active.
If you had a Windows machine that hadn't been run for a few years, and it was set to automatically check for updates, it would offer you updates within 5 minutes of being connected to the net. That's just how it works.
Of course, you knew that.-Gordon

How long did you wait ? the firmware versions for example is checked every 12 hours or after a reboot of a new version I think ?
Sometimes I'm impatient with the fw and just downloads it and install it.--------------------------------------------------------------------

Not really.
SBS checks on startup, but often fails (it does it in background and has a very short time limit so if the network is not configured it won't sit and wait for DNS timeout) on startup because the machine is often busy at that point and the timeout fails.
It doesn't check every 5 minutes. It does recheck firmware updates an hour later if the first check times out, but I believe server version are check far less frequently.
As for what Windows does: I don't care what Windows does -- as I said, my sole Windows machine has been broken for a couple years (dead power supply) and I don't use it.
Of course, if the human operating the computer knows there is a new version, then who -cares- whether SBS has polled for an update or not: "I KNOW there is an update but I'm not going to get it, I'll just whine that it didn't tell me something I knew already!"
