New User: How to Tag Albums that are "Unknown"

Very new to Squeezebox (2 days and I'm not technical). I've ripped a few CDs that come up as "Unknown_Artist_Unknown Album" even though they are new and well known. Is there a way I can get Squeezebox to search again for the details? If not, how can I manually override and add my own titles?
    Thanks
    Paul

PS: I have tried to change the file names manually through my Window directory "My Network Places/music on VortexBox Media Server and SMB Master/flac" and using "rename" but I get the error message "Remove the write-protection or use another disk". How do I remove write protection?

Squeezebox searches for tags in the underlying music files and in their absence will try to infer artist and album from directory names and file names. After tagging you'll have to have Squeezeboxserver rescan looking for changed files.

What ripper did you use to do the ripping? Most use some tag source to retrieve album related metadata. Something that may be handy now is top use a tagger that makes use of FreeDB as a source - FreeDB lookups are done using a TOC algorithm that attempts to match the tracks to an album. Both mp3tag (Windows) and puddletag (Linux/ OS X/ *nix) can use FreeDB in this manner. Another (but definitely longer method) would be to use Picard tagger to undertake audio analysis and attempt identification using the result.
Linux finally gets a great audio tagger: puddletag - now packaged in most Linux distributions.

Thanks for this. I'll give it a try. My ripper is called a VortexSpinner. It seems to work well. Main issue is trying to delete files from it for songs that I know I'll never want to play. I can't seem to get permission from my own computer to delete! Any suggestions? Tx

Sounds like you are using VortexBox. I think it has a web interface for editing tags. It may also have settings for the file permission problem you have.

I don't use one but my understanding is that you can type VORTEXBOX into a browser and that should take you to the webpage of the machine. Should be able to find things from there.

    Vortex box files

    Hi Paul,
Type '\\vortexbox\files' into your browser & it will access the files. You can then delete cover files or paste them as 'cover.jpg'. The next step is to remove the incorrect cover art from your caching to stop it re-populating & rescan your library.
I am sure this works - but I cant figure out how to delete the cached files - Anyone out there help? The guide says to open the control panel/advanced/clear caching - but I cant access anthing like this.
