maybe a multipass detector then?
first pass, your current exact method, seems to work well.
second, slower pass, an audio fingerprint is made, and comparisons then result in percent of likelihood something might be a dupe?
it would be cool if it could be done such that these dupes were presented in such a way that the user could click and listen to judge for themselves, and delete if need be. or reject the dupe as a false positive, and report that to a central net source, to improve detection methods.
maybe also develop tags that can be inserted, like a TXXX frame for hash and another for fingerprint ID?

Not sure this is any better, feels like everyone would have to run both passes if they wanted to find duplicates and then it feels better to only run the second pass as it anyway needs to be executed on all files even if the first pass have been executed previously.
Even though the plugin is named "Duplicate Detector" the intention with it was actually to test technologies that were able to find exact matches. The intention was to use these technologies later on to make it possible to retag/rename/move files and still make the statistic data such as ratings, play counts survive a full rescan. It was just easier to test the technology in a duplicate detector plugin than implementing the real thing directly.Erland Isaksson (My homepage)
