    FLAC and 1TB

    Hi

I am gradually ripping my CD collection into FLAC. I have about 850 cds. Will 1TB be enough?

    Thanks

Yes, you should get around 3 CDs per gigabyte. A terabyte is enough for about 3000 CDs. I have 4800 CDs on a 1.5TB drive and it's not full yet.

    In FLAC?

    Whew... :-)

Actually, I can remove about 70 - 100 classical cd from my list so it's about 700 CDs

A 72 minute CD in WAV format is about 700MB. FLAC compression level 5 (the usual default), on the average, gets around 2:1 compression, so a full-length CD in FLAC is about 350MB. Most CDs aren't 72 minutes long, resulting in a smaller average size.

A CD can be up to about 700 MB in size uncompressed, but almost all will be smaller. FLAC tends get around 40-50% compression on average. Both figures will depend on the makeup of your library. Reissues of old albums tend to be smaller, live shows and classical recordings tend to be larger and different types of music compress to different degrees.

My library averages about 315 MB per CD in FLAC. A 1 TB hard drive actually gives you about 931 GB (binary) of storage, so I can expect to get about

    931 / 0.315 = 2,955 CDs

    Thank you.

I am using dBpoweramp to rip to FLAC with the default compression of 5. I am very new to FLAC so I am not changeing any compression levels at all as I would not know what I am doing :-( I am assumming the lower compression level (5) is better then higher.

70% of my 858 CD collection is Blues Rock, Bluzy Jazz (Robben Ford) Jazz, Contemporary/Fusion Jazz (Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour etc), 20% Pop Music and 10% classical.

I understand jazz Cd, especially Contemporary/Fusion (GRP label) are less compressed hence they sound so much better then the pop CDs I have. Mind you the Pop Cds I bought 10-15 years ago sounds so much better then the ones I occassional get now.

So in essence, 1TB will be enough for my 858 CDs in FLAC with plenty of room to spare :-)

If I were you I would not play around with the compression level because the gain is not much and your server/SBT will have more work to do. So I would just stick to level 5. And yes, don't worry 1TB will be enough!.

Have fun ... I know I did. Just be cautious about the album art. Try to keep just one "cover.jpg" in each album folder and make sure they're no larger than 500x500.
