It's like a hammer: if you have to ask what you will use it for, then it may not be a good idea to use it. :-)

More seriously, though, how have I used ssh on the Controller?

    1) used it in the early days to direct output to the headphone jack (this is now done automatically)
    2) setting a true static IP address
    3) customizing the menus for the SqueezeIR plugin (I think this also now has a better UI than ssh)
    4) changing the background color of the active menu item (this can now be done much more easily using the Patch Installer)

On the SB Radio I've used ssh to change the music used for the fallback alarm.

The bottom line is that I have found ssh useful for trying/customizing newer plugins, applets, and patches. Most of those that people find useful eventually get a more convenient user interface to change the settings. I think (2) above is the only exception in my case.

    Talking

Yes for setting of static ip without having to turn of dchp.

And also changing network settings without having to run the whole setup guide.

Changed bootup sound and splash screen ( as an experiment)

You can change the wireless password too via ssh .

If you dont have netstumbler or similar you can survey wifi via the command line .

I have used more on the Touch to disable wifi ,logging samba and analog outs etc.

On Touch before the disabling of volume control worked properly, you had to do it by editing a *.lua file

On both controller Touch and Radio
changed the motd file to show info about me instead of standard greeting (if they get stolen )

After editing for example the network setting you have to reboot the device this can also be done over ssh for all squeezeplay devices.

    Thanks abt SSH -

I did get a static address on the controller w/ssh, and this exercise has made me a big fan of winscp.

I <m able to use ssh root@IP-number and then I can access the my USB-stick on the Touch from the terminal. And apparently it gets mounted to /media/something. However, I can't see the drive from PCMan and /media is empty

I also tried smb://[SB's ip number] but I got an error.

    Any suggestions?
