Besides what you mention I believe many of the people complaining would like a pre-installed silent low power box if they can't get TinySC reliable on the Touch.
Is there any solution that performs good, is pre-installed and have a price which people is prepared to pay ?
VortexBox is probably more than what most of these people want, so it gets too expensive.
The NAS solutions available gets to expensive because if you want a CPU that's fast enough and enough memory you usually need to select a more expensive NAS than you need. In these expensive NAS boxes you have to pay for reliability, replication and similar features which might not necessarily be that important in a SBS server, you just want a faster CPU and more memory.
I think a Sheevaplug has the right price but I don't think anyone sells them with pre-installed SBS yet. However, installing SqueezePlug on it is fairly simple as long as you are used to working with computers.
Another interesting option is a small silent box with audio circuits so you can use it as SBS server plus output music through it using squeezeslave or something similar.
Anyway, I think the price is important. People don't want to pay additionally $300 just to get their $299 Touch to work as advertised. $300 is fine for people with multiple Squeezeboxes but it's not for most people that only have one.

Honestly I think most people who are planning on really tweaking/hacking their Squeezeboxes but don't have a lot of spare cash are best off with getting a netbook or nettop for $150-$300 -- the amount of flexiblity you gain by having a full-fledged PC running SBS (and potentially lots of other software) more than makes up for the slightly higher price and power consumption.
For people who just want "something that works" a NAS is a good way to go. (This is what most of the contract installer guys installing, e.g., Crestron systems use.) If you're price sensitive, Sheevaplugs or similar are good but you do effectively "pay" for the savings in dollars by putting in extra time to get it all going. (I'd bet you a nickel that a lot of the Sheevaplug installs for people who don't consider themselves hacker/tweaker types were actually done by friends of the end user...)

Definitely, because it isn't pre-installed today, you need to find the correct thread/wiki page and use various kinds of software and a computer with a SD-card slot.
If it came with a pre-installed SBS and an introduction manual that described how to setup your new music server the situation would be a lot different.Erland Isaksson (My homepage)
