I'm running into speed issues with my setup. If I try to navigate Artists or Albums with either of my Squeezeboxes, it can take several minutes to view a list of items. I have a Miscellaneous directory containing just under 500 files which can take upwards of 5 minutes to view when navigating through Music Folder from a Squeezebox.
Where can I start to look to get things to speed up?
My system has 512MB of memory and Dual P3 800MHz CPUs. My library has 29,073 Total Tracks.
In general, my CPUs are less than 5% busy. When navigating with the Squeezebox or the Web Interface that spikes up to 75%-80%.
Other information from the web interface:
Squeezebox Server Version: 7.4.2 - r30215 @ Fri Feb 19 16:22:31 MST 2010
Operating system: Red Hat - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: i686-linux
Perl Version: 5.8.8 - i386-linux-thread-multi
MySQL Version: 5.0.77
Is there a minimum system requirements somewhere that I missed?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Chris

Speed issues?

Yes there are system minimums. Depending on system, the windows minimum says 256MB of RAM and a CPU of 733MHz Pentium or greater. Linux can probably get away with less, but the key here is his minimum is not a guarantee of the level of performance, just that it will work. For a library of your size I would prefer a P4 or new Atom MB with at least 1GB of RAM. The thing that you are trying to do is CPU intense. Also how is the hard drive, is it completely full? Does it have at least 15% actual free space left on it?
Many things affect SBS performance from number of active plugins, transcoding, amount of available server horsepower. The larger the library, the more SBS Server one needs to keep things up to what one is used to.iPhone

Has the performance degraded, or has it always been like this? If it has degraded, then you can probably fix it.
The place to start would probably be to clear the contents of the cache folder and start again. Stop the server first, clear the cache, then restart the server. Squeezebox Server should rescan your library on startup.

If you have done a "clear and rescan" there usually isn't a reason to use "Music Folder."
Please try using either the "Artist" or "Album" interface options and type back what your response is like.
It sounds like you have enough hardware with that OS but it could also depend on what other services you are running at the same time.
Try posting the results of (after opening a terminal)
service all status

Thanks everyone. I have done a clear and rescan. That doesn't seem to help. I've actually completely removed and reinstalled Squeezebox Server. Same problem. I do not have a least 15% free space on the drive(s). It's a 309G LVM with only about 10G free. So 97% in use.
Clicking Music Library then Artists causes the CPU to peg at 100% for about 45 seconds. (Library has 2,586 Artists.)
Performance degraded several months ago when I upgraded to a 6.x version and again to the 7.x version. (I've been slacking on figuring out what's going on.) I had previously been running a VERY old version of Slimserver. That version ran pretty well with more or less the same number of files. Unfortunately, I do not recall the version number. I believe it used a simpler database engine than MySQL. (SQLite? I can't recall the name.)
I've been using the Music Folder as an alternate as it is 5x quicker than Artists or Albums.
I don't believe there is much transcoding going on. My entire library is mp3s and aac/m4a files. (95% of which are mp3s.)
The server doesn't do much. It's a firewall and file share mostly.
