How to access artwork at certain levels/depths

Hello all. This one is driving me crazy. I've started changing artwork names to "cover.jpg" or "Folder.jpg", etc. for my FLAC files so Squeezebox Server can see it and apply to my Duet controller and iPeng.

My normal path is from HardDrive/MyFLACS/AlbumFolder and that works all right it seems at 3-deep.

But if I have the following scenario: HardDrive/MyFLACS/ArtistDiscography/AlbumFolder which is 4-levels deep, my artwork can't be seen or retrieved. For example if I have HardDrive/MyFLACS/TheBeatles/Rubber Soul and the cover.jpg or Folder.jpg is inside the Rubber Soul folder it is not being pulled from there. And putting cover.jpg at "TheBeatles" level won't work because you've got to have the exact "cover.jpg" or "Folder.jpg" name I believe.

So, is there a way I can make the Squeezebox Server software (on my Macintosh Pro) "look" one level deeper? That would seem to be the thing that would solve my problems.

    Thanks!

I don't think this is normal behavior... I use folder.jpg in each of my "album" directories without problem, and am sure it is a "deeper" directory tree than that (though I'm not on Mac).
Have you tried completely re-scanning your music (not just "scan for new/changed music" but "rescan everything")?
You're not seeing the correct artwork on any interface (web ui, iPeng, controller, Radio), or is it only on certain devices/interfaces?

I, too, have spammy long path names several levels deep and don't see this.

But, if you're anything before 7.5 (and it may be in 7.5 as well, been a long time since I ran 7.5 trunk..) you may have to do a 'clear and rescan' to pick up new artwork completely. 7.6 seems to be doing this a lot better, but has its own issues.

Thanks tcutting and snarlydwarf for your quick responses. You both seem to rule out the depth of nesting of folders as an issue and that's a good start as I thought that was part of the problem.

To give you more info: I'm using Squeezebox Server 32-bit Version 7.4.2 / r30215 for Macintosh which seems to be the latest stable version right? However you are referencing versions 7.5 and 7.6. Are these beta versions? Are they available for the Mac? Should I switch to one of these versions? If so, where can I find them? (I know there's an "overnight versions" area somewhere but I'm not sure where that is.)

I have, indeed, cleared and scanned, in fact, within the last week. And now that I'm checking the iPeng app and the Logitech controller it seems both are reading the artwork better than I had thought it was. iPeng seems sluggish reading/loading in some of the artwork. I'm not sure what an optimal size for the artwork should be: 17k? 87k? 124k? etc. I also have a Mac-only app called Plex that does seem incapable of finding artwork within nested folders but I can contact them about that issue. Perhaps they have a workaround.

Thanks for your help. Knowing that nested folders can and should be seen by the devices is a big help to troubleshooting things. If you have any additional suggestions, please fire away!

    Thanks,

I'm not aware of any basic artwork issues being addressed by the "beta" software (7.4.3 and higher), so it shouldn't be anything related to running 7.4.2. V7.4.3 is a very stable version, just minor bug fixes from the released 7.4.2, and v7.5.0 is in a feature freeze - apparently being readied for official release status (I assume in support of Touch release), and I've been running it fine for a few weeks.
I know of artwork issues related to caching - for example I had artwork issues in the Web UI which required me to clear the cache in the web browser to clear up... not sure how iPeng deals with artwork, or if there are any potential caching "staleness" which cna take place. For the controller you might try of full turn off/turn on cycle, and realize if your library is fairly large that it may take a bit to download the artwork so you may see placeholder icons until the actual artwork has been downloaded to the device.

Thanks for the further info tcutting. iPeng does have a "clear cache" feature but I'm not sure if artwork is part of the cache as iPeng sees it.

I'm looking a the following under the "Advanced" tab in the Mac Squeezebox Server application. Would the "Clean cache folder, including music database, artwork cache, etc." be something good to run? Does is just clean up things or does it delete the existing artwork? Should I do a "Run Cleanup" with "Clean cache..." selected then do a "Clear library and rescan"?

    Thanks again!
