    Squeezecenter on sheevaplug

I've been running my sheevaplug for about 2 months now - no problem at all.
It is not that hard to setup due to very good instructions. I ordered mine from NewIT in the UK - they shipped it very quickly and I'm happy.
Besides SqueezeServer - I run Samba/Print server on my old USB printer and filesharing too.

Squeezeserver GUI runs nice no prob. at all. It's on 24/7 and my external usb drives powers down when not in use, so overall powerconsumption I'd rate to about 6 watts in idle - haven't checked it though. It serves SB3, Boom and radio and no problem having all of them playing at the same time.

I'm really interested in one on these Shevaplugs as it would save having to run a PC with my Duet.

Sorry if this seems a silly question (and if it has been answered previously) but would a Sheevaplug work well with a NAS drive* or would you ideally need a USB HD to plug in?

    TIA.

edit - it's WD MyWorld and not powerful enough to run the required server software!

I got the Sheevaplug for exactly the same reasons. You should be able to use it with a NAS drive connected with music on it - that setup is as far as I know very common.

I'm very very happy with the sheevaplug solution - in addition I ordered a 4 gb sd card to house the OS with Squeezecenter.

    Regards, Bo.

Just thought I'd post this here as well:

I'm not really up to speed with how this stuff works so go easy on me!

I was thinking of getting a NAS for my SqueezeBox Duet, when I had the idea of maybe getting a touchscreen monitor to control it.

Is that possible? I just find that I have so much music it makes the remote a little cumbersome to use. And if I had maybe a wall mounted touchscreen monitor and it'd be like having a little jukebox.

    Is that possible?
Any help would be appreciated thanks!

the best way to control SBS is a SBC (part of the duet) or ipad, ipod, etc type thing to do it. so you could do that. as to what NAS type solutions will let you use a wired touchscreen, you'll have to investigate that, and the sheevaplug isn't really a NAS, in the normal sense of the word.

want simple? get a x86 readynas or try vortexbox.

+1 on the vortexbox and simple. I unpacked it last week, plugged it in, attached ethernet cable to my router from the box. Turned it on. Went to the vortexbox web interface on my laptop, changed vortexbox to a fixed IP address. Rebooted. Then started playing internet radio stations via SbS > Transporter into my stereo system. From unpacking box to setup and playing was 10 minutes max. Took me about 10 hours to copy 60k files from an external drive to the internal Vortexbox drive. Another couple of hours for SbS to scan. And then I was in business with my own music too.

I can also use the vortexbox as general HD storage on my LAN that I can access from any computer on the LAN.

And I control it all from either (1) ipeng on iphone, (2) SB Controller (wife uses this), (3) my laptop running SqueezePlay to emulate controller, (4) my laptop using Web UI of SbS, or (5) The SB Touch in the living room.

p.s. I also have a sheevaplug I haven't unpacked yet. I'm going to use this at the weekend place to feed a TOUCH and Boom, but haven't had time to set it up. More complicated than the vortexbox which was plug and play.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the Sheevaplug has any kind of video output, so a wired touchscreen would be a nonstarter. If you really want a touchscreen then it seems to me your choices are:

    1) portable touchscreen, like an iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android-based device,
    2) connect a touchscreen to your regular pc, and access the Sheevaplug remotely from that, or
    3) forget Sheevaplug and get or build a lightweight pc. There are many options, especially if you're willing/able to build it yourself.
