Maybe that works, pleas try! But: You will not have eSata support right now. Please try and inform me. The rest we should discuss later.

Thanks Thomas, that actually worked! :-) But I guess I now have the same problem you had in December - unable to boot from NAND? http://forum.doozan.com/read.php?2,2966

Did you manage to sort that out?

    Hi John!
Yes you are right!!! Same problem for me. I did't got it to work and finally send it back! So you can use it as it is but you will not have any eSata support. For that you will need a differnt kernel and an other arc number I think. I asked a few times in Jeff's formum, but it seems that no one is interessted in a solution. I think it should work fine, but one has to figure it out. Right now I haven't the time for that. I'm still working on the sound-problem with Sheeva! Maybe you can look around and ask in Jeff's forum?!

I was a bit to fast apparently! It did indeed boot to the USB image one time. However, when trying again it suddenly goes into "orange blinking" again and I am simply not able to successfully boot the stick. Any idea why? Suggestions?

Hi, I don't know how you powered down, but I usually have this problem, that after a power down (simply unplug the device), the USB-stick get corrupted - but if you burn the image once again, then it will boot from the stick once again.

If you gracefully shut down the device, it is more reliable, and often I'm able to reboot.

Hi John, yes as abp told: allways shout down the device by using shutdown -h now. Wait 30 Seconds and then unplug the devise. Try to "reburn" the USB-Stick. If this stick does not work try another.

Good luck and please keep us informed!

    Greetings,
    Thomas

Actually, I did a shutdown -h. Maybe I did not wait 30 seconds. Anyway, I did a reburn of the USB stick - did not work. After many retries it suddenly booted again and now I am up and running. It might be the USB stick that does not cold boot (well)? Only sometimes?

Now I am running - is there anything I should setup/try before rebooting again? Setup netconsole? Reflash mtd0?

    Hi John,
yes some USB-Sticks only boot sometimes!

Sorry but I was in the same situation like you. Please try ro find someone to help i Jeff's forum. I had no luck with that and send the device back at least. I've a new one there but haven't try it again. Maybe you are lucky!

    Hi Thomas.

I read that the ZFS file system is now possible under Debian Squeeze. This filesystem is much more reliable that ext3 in regard of data integrity during power loss.
So I would like to use this files system for the USB stick where the Dockstar image and swap file is located, in order to see if that would improve the reliability of the system.

BUT as a complete linux novice I don't know how to do that - can you help me with that?

    Regards

    Crashing Server

I need a bit of help with a SheevaPlug based server.

I have been using this server for a year now and all seems well except that it will “crash” or “hang” on occasions. This has always been discovered by the inability to connect to the server. On every occasion resetting or power cycling the plug has solved the problem and it was never considered to be a big issue.

Recently I decided to use the server with my Boom to provide an alarm clock by playing my music files. Now I am discovering that the server is “crashing” far more often than occasionally, more like regularly, but not after every use just randomly.

Can someone help me get started with troubleshooting this issue by helping me sort out logging, what to log and what to set the options to?

My Plug is using Version: 7.5.2 - r31632

    Thanks in advance…

I run Solaris and ZFS at work and have had to revert back to the standard filesystem for computers with less than 2GB of memory.
I don't think you'll have much luck running it in 128MB on the DS or even in 512MB on the sheeveplug.
