squeezecenter on server streaming on internet

I have a synology server where my squeezecenter is currently running. Its great. The server is streaming music wireless to my Logitech duet reciever.

    question
I have a hollyday house abroad, where I would like the same option, but without an additional server. So can I use my excisting server at home, via the internet, to stream music to my hollydayhouse modem and wireless router and to a extra squeezebox duet?

Yes, but you'll need to have the right kind of router, etc. and have the right ports open so you can access your primary home LAN from outside the LAN.

Do you know the IP of your ISP modem? Assuming winders, you can open a command prompt and use the command ipconfig /all

The "gateway" shown is the IP of your modem (assuming the PC is wired to the modem.)

Enter this IP address (it will be xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) into your browser's address window and see if you get a response. Most modern modems will ask for a user name and a password. Google the modem's maker and model to find the "defaults" for user name and password. Many are "admin" and the serial number of the modem.

    Type back for more.

    Paul

Welcome to the fun. Where are you, what PC OS are you using, and what type of broadband do you have (including the modem/model?)

Just for background, your internet connection has two different IP's: one that is seen by the outside world and the other that is used "inside" your home.

To get the "outside" IP, browse to whatismyip.com and write down the number. You will need it to get things working from the remote location.

Also, there are two varieties of "outside" IP addresses: static (unchanging) and dynamic (can change if your ISP does so.) Cable modems typically have a static (permanent) address. DSL modems have a dynamic address unless you pay extra (or have a faster level of service.) For example, ATT (my carrier) gives you a static address if your DSL is at 3MBs or faster. Since they charge only about $5/month more to upgrade from the slower speed and they used to charge $12/month to add a static address feature to a cheaper/slower line, it's way better just to upgrade to the point you get a static IP.)

See this fairly recent wiki article:

    http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.ph..._another_place

    And this less recent:

    http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.ph...ectingRemotely

    Both describe the basic concept.

However, please, please, please, make sure you put some basic security in place to prevent anyone else from accessing your server instance and potentially your entire system.

I have opened my router for my friend on Port 3483 (UDP),Port 3483 (TCP), Port 9000 (TCP)as the manual says I should. http://www.hometech.com/pdf/lt-squeeduet_1.pdf

So should it not work now, when we give my external ip to my friends reciever at his home? Then he should be able to connect to my SB server and stream "my" music into his home?

he can access my SB server admin and music player on the server with a browser by typing: my external ip:9002 - so the door i open through the firewall..

He said yesterday it did not work, and I am visiting him tonight - any clues before would be nice

    thx
