    Best tagging software

I'm sure this has been asked a lot in these forums, but I couldn't easily
    find it:

What is the best tagging software out there? (For dealing with 100's of
    music files)

What is the best format to encode to? (MP3, Ogg Vorbis.)

    Thanks,

    ds

BPM Analyzer sounded great - so I downloaded it. It displays the BPM in it's own Window, and it says it can export this data to an XLS file. How do you get it to update the MP3 tag?

for tagging MP3s i use ID3-TagIT, which is both good and free ...

personally i encode everything as MP3 using LAME "--alt-preset standard" settings (about 192K VBR).

another handy utility (if you are into dance music) is the following BPM analyser (also free), that will write the BPM of each song to the MP3 BMP tag. unfortunately slim does not do anything with the BPM tag yet.

    It does it automatically.
If you're using iTunes you'll need to do a 'GetInfo' on the file for
    iTunes to notice.
I don't know about other players.

This would be the greatest thing ever if it also supported AAC. But it
    doesn't...

That depends on what you want to do. If you:

    1. Want broad compatibility with everything, and don't care about much
    else -- MP3.
    2. Want to create a permanent archive and use an iPod -- Apple Lossless.
    3. Want to create a permanent archive and stay in the Microsoft ecosystem
(Media Center, Media Player, etc.) -- WMA Lossless.
    4. Want to create a perment archive and stay as open as possible (or play
losslessly on a non-iPod portable device with the Rio Karma) -- FLAC.
    5. Are fanatical about open source -- FLAC.
    6. Are fanatical about open source and have very little disk space -- Ogg.

I would recommend a hybrid approach, especially for use with a
portable device: do a master rip with FLAC, for use on the computer
and Squeezebox, then transcode to 128kbps MP3 for use on the iPod or
whatever. That's what I'll be doing once I get my new hard drive.

This gives the best of both worlds: perfect quality for a permanant
archive and Squeezebox listening (and open source!), plus broad
compatibility, small size, and good battery life on the go. There's
really no need for a lossless codec on the subway...

Also keep in mind that battery life on portable players tends to be
roughly proportional to bitrate, since the majority of power is used
in spinning up the hard drive to fill the internal buffer.

I use MP3Tag from http://www.mp3tag.de/. It supports Vorbis comments
    (tags) too.

As has already been suggested, I encode to FLAC initially and then
create MP3s using LAME's "standard" setting. This works well for me.\

If you have a lot of song with bad or inconsistent tags, the
MusicBrainz tagging system is pretty cool. They have an audio
recognition and tagging system that identifies the music in question
by analyzing the audio data itself. They've got a reasonably complete
database right now, and the tagging program is prety good, although it
doesn't support enough fields right now. They're talking about a new
database format that supports an incredible amount of tags, but it may
never be released. For now it works pretty well.

It's very useful for files with bad tags.

    Internet Streaming

Using the SB, I like to stream my music to wherever I may be. But when I stream it constantly re-buffers every 10 seconds or so. I've changed the player settings to limit the bitrate from the server to player, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Does the speed of my server have anything to do with how often it's re-buffered? It's only a 450mhz P3 w/512 mb of RAM. I'm pretty sure the connection is not the issue, when streaming I'm usually on a broad band, at least 1.5mbps, on both sending and receiving end whenever I try to do this. Any thoughts? Or are there any other settings that I may not know of to help with this issue. All of the files that I try to stream are mp3s 256kbps bitrate.

cool, you have a T1 at home? That must be nice.

If you've actually got something else, your uplink from home is probably
256k or less, and you'll need to limit bitrate to 128k or lower. You
mentioned you've tried limiting bitrate, have you tried dialing it really
    low (say 32k)?

Memory might be an issue, depending on how many songs you have. CPU is
    probably fine.
