I bought the Radio a couple weeks ago for a clock radio. We keep it on the dresser (not bedside) so the lack of a remote is a deal-breaker.
I considered sidegrading (downgrading?) to the Boom to get the remote, but I'm very happy with the user interface of the Radio, and I think the sound on the Radio is fine. My understanding is that the Boom interface would be a step backward.
But it is killing me to think that I have to spend $56 to get a remote control. I don't have any need for the included battery pack.
I have tried remote controlling it with the iTouch, and that works, but the iTouch travels all over the house: it is not reliably at the bedside, nor is it convenient.
Has anybody out there used some kind of cheap $20 universal remote to control this thing? On/off, volume, and presets would be adequate.

Sell it on ebay. I know there are many battery buyers who don't need the remote.

Make sure it supports JVC codes.

I would disagree. Especially from across the room. The biggest differences in the interface are
- Radio's color, graphics capable display vs. Boom's text only monochrome.
- Radio's multi-line display vs. Boom's one or two lines.
- Boom's _much_ larger text, particularly using the large single-line font.
- Dedicated volume knob on the Radio.
- Much more comfortable button spacing on the Boom.
The multi-line display is nice, but you have to be right on top of it, using the font panel controls. Boom's larger text, IMO, more than makes up for it as it's readable from across the room. I don't miss the volume knob at all on the Boom. Color graphics are eye-candy and, again, only a factor if you're sitting right on top of the Radio.
You used to be able to buy a full-sized Squeezebox remote on the Slim Devices site for $10 or $20, but with Logitech, God only knows. The remotes that come with either the Boom or the Radio accessory pack are miniature, bare-bones things that have only a handful of usable buttons.

Yes, I have. You can also use a "learning" remote where it learns each button on the remote individually. You may have one laying around.
Another option is to buy the IR remote for the SB3 or the Touch. Even though the Touch is not out yet they appear to be selling the IR remote now.

The remote is available separately as a replacement part for the Boom:

But I think the best idea would be to team up with another Radio owner who only wants the battery, but not the remote. That would make two happy customers.

From across the room, you would not be able to read the display anyway. So the only buttons you would use on the remote are volume up and down, power, and numbers for the presets. Just get a $5 universal remote that supports JVC codes.

Out of curiousity, is it easier to text search with the full size remote? is there any sort of typing? I just can't stand the scrolling...

Software Squeezebox remote for Android devices
I'm a recent owner of a Squeezebox Radio, really enjoying it so far. I bought an app for Android phones called Squeeze Commander and find it to be an excellent remote control, especially easy to search through a large music library, as well when I start the app it prompts to turn on the wireless on my phone & then logs into Squeezebox Server and/or Mysqueezebox.com, also mutes or lowers the play volume automatically when the phone rings. I think a similar app is available for iphone, a handy and functional alternative to the dedicated hardware remote.
