Yes, this really is a shame (that and the fact I can't get a battery in Canada!)
Maybe they would consider adding this functionality? It's only software after all. Some sort of toggle setting which says to keep the radio 'alive' if the power goes out but there is some charge remaining in the battery.

Typical clock radios? That is absolutely not true at all. "Typical" alarm clock radios have a battery backup, even the cheapest ones you can find at Wallyworld. I have an old Sony Dream Machine radio from the mid-90's that doesn't even have a battery. It charges up an internal capacitor to store a charge and the alarm works flawlessly with no power to it. Still use it to this day.
