SB receiver rebuffers - but not a network problem

One of my two SB receivers has recently started to have bad rebuffering problems. Playback pauses and resumes repeatedly. When I run the network test (from the controller: Settings/Advanced/Network Test) to test at 1000 kps, it shows 100% success (green bar) about two-thirds of the time, but 0% success (red bar) about one-third of the time.

Naturally, this looks like a problem with my wireless network. But here is why I think it is more complicated than that. I have another SB receiver on the same network which is absolutely fine. Testing at 1000 kps, it shows 100% success all the time on the Network Test. And the "good" receiver only has 36% wireless signal strength. But the "bad" receiver has 76% wireless signal strength in its usual location and had 89% signal strength when I sat it next to the wireless router for testing - and it still showed the problem.

There are also some Squeezebox classics on the same network and they pass the Network Test fine too.

The "bad" receiver has worked fine for about a year and has the same configuration as the "good". I am wondering if some hardware fault could be causing the problem. Has anyone else seen anything similar? (see thread on "7.4.1 rebuffering woes").

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

I have had major rebuffering woes on my 2 booms and SB3 with 7.4 and have removed it and gone back to 7.3.3...up to now no problems, fingers crossed!

I have an SB3 running on a 100 Mb/s wired Ethernet network, SqueezeBox Server running on an HP MediaSmart EX470, browser running on a high end multicore Server with Windows 7. I ran SC 7.3.1 for quite a while, and had periodic pauses at the end of a track such as you have described. If the pause was very long (more than a few seconds), the previous track would repeat.

I upgraded to one of the nightly builds of 7.4, and the repeating problem is completely gone. However, the pauses now occur more frequently, and occasionally in the middle of a track which never happened before. I also see the system hang up - SqueezeBox Server shows a few seconds of a track being played, then resets to he beginning and loops on this behavior. No sound is produced. If I step forward one track, the process starts up again (after a pause), but stepping backward does not seem to get me out of the loop. If I turn logging on, I see during the loop that the buffer is at 0%. SS says "CONNECTING..." whenever the music pauses or loops.

Does anyone have any ideas? It sounds like going back to 7.3.3 might be a good idea, but does it have the pausing problems like 7.3.1 did?
