OK. I can ssh
from my laptop (xp) to my desktop (ubuntu 9.10)
not from my laptop (xp) to my mediabox (9.04/squeeze)
Same is true for ftping from the laptop.
Once I ssh from laptop to desktop, I can then ssh from that shell to my mediabox.
For some reason only my desktop can have a connection to the mediabox.
It's not ufw on the mediabox blocking me. And I can't think of something else that would be doing this.

Well, installing onto desktop gives me a working server (Karmic Koala amd64), took 2 minutes.
Maybe it's time for a clean install of jaunty on the mediabox. XBMC doesn't seem to be ready for Karmic, so I'll keep jaunty.
Any suggestions for a fix without clean install appreciated.

Fresh install of jaunty and squeezeboxserver on mbox. Tried 7.3.3 as well.
It's as though only one machine is allowed to access ports on mbox. I cannot figure this out. Nothing in hosts.allow/deny that I see that would be doing this, nothing in the configuration of the interfaces, nothing in the router, but it's as though the mbox is dark to anything but the desktop. If I change the ip of the desktop, however, it still can ssh etc. So it's not something filtering by ip address.
This is getting frustrating. To summarize in the hopes someone sees a way forward.
Server still can't find the players.
I can ping the players.
I can see them "acking" when they try to connect to squeezecenter in a network sniffer (wireshark).
Port 9000 shows as open on a nmap scan from another desktop.
I can ssh into mbox from one machine (desktop) but not from the other.
I can view the web interface from one machine (desktop) but not from the laptop (xp).
I can stream to desktop, but not from the laptop.
ufw is disabled.
From my laptop I can ping everything on the network but mbox. That just times out. But I can ping mbox from desktop.
Running squeezeboxserver on desktop, players connect to that with no problem and play fine.
In squeezecenter web interface (mbox) under "players" both desktop and a squeezboom show up when squeezeboxserver is running on desktop. So, squeezecenter on mbox can find squeezboxserver on desktop.
ANY SUGGESTIONS will be much appreciated.Last edited by Clnanderson; 2009-11-07 at 08:50.

Interesting. I can get web access to mbox from the laptop if I use it's network name ('mbox'), and after doing that I could get access using the ip address!
When I ssh from the desktop it tells me that the last login was from desktop.wanaddress but when the last login was from the laptop it doesn't give the full address just the network name. Don't know whether that changes anything.
But, that didn't change anything for the players.Last edited by Clnanderson; 2009-11-07 at 09:12.

In your first post you mentioned eth0 and wlan0. How are they related to your network setup?
Would be interesting to see the output from "ifconfig -a", "route -n" and "iwconfig".

Strangely, it's only Windows machines that can connect
I'm not sure why, but only my windows machine can connect. This probably has something to what we are all trying to do.
