Hi,

I have a WD My Book World Edidiotn 1 To network drive. It is certified DLNA 1.5 and UPnP. It implements a twonku media server.

I just bought a SB duet, and I understand that it is mandatory to install SqueezeCenter application on any NAS system to have access to music on stored on the NAS.

I searched into the forum if it is possible to install SC on the WD My Book World Edition and did not find any recent answer.

I uderstood also that the SB is not a DLNA client. Is it correct ? Any plans to implement DLNA ? I believe it is easier to follow industry standards (and inter-operate with various NAS) instaed of trying to install SC on NAS ?????

So any idea how to have access from the SB to the music stored on this network drive ?

The SB was designed to be a relatively "dum" device with the "intelligence" residing in squeezecenter. Your NAS box is also a "dum" device. So if you connect them the "intelligence" that indexes, searches, updates, configures, etc... is missing.

In your case, you need to install squeezecenter on a computer or your WD device. In order to run squeezecenter on the SB it would need to be beefed up with memory and a faster cpu. DLNA compliance is irrelevant if nothing is performing the function of squeezecenter.

Can you login to the WD device? If so, it should be possible to install squeezecenter although it may take too much effort to be sensible. In addition, squeezecenter will not run quickly because it was designed for "proper" computers and not the small reduced ones found in routers, NAS boxes or, indeed, squeezeboxes.

Option 5 : Not required.

the Squeeze system is moving in a different direction the Touch (replacement for the SB3) has its own server built in. TinySC, as it is code named, is a far more powerful piece of software then a regular DLNA server like Twonky.

I can just login the WD device using the html management interface... So I am not sure it is possible to add a third party software on it...

That doesn't make them hackable.

I've not heard of any of the MyBooks being able to accept additional third party software. I think the specs of these units is really low.

In which case you are probably locked out in the same way I was locked out of the LS-Mini. I was surprised when I found this because I only bought it because it ran Linux and so could be used for repositories and a music server as well as for backups. However, it is widely advertised on the web how to "break in". This is very likely the case for your NAS box.

However getting in is only a tiny first step. You have then got to determine how to install all the guff squeezecenter requires in order to work. If you are the first to do this then it will take a very long time and require you to know a lot about programming and how the operating system works. Your few sentences so far suggest you do not possess this knowledge. In which case you are beaten unless you can find somebody that has already done it.

I've had a quick search, and yes you can log into the Worldbook via SSH but there is very little else tou can do. I've not seen anyone installing Perl or SqueezeCenter on these devices, they just don't have the memory or processing power.

Forget the idea of using it without a PC running as well.

I agree with you, that's why I think in this case that DLNA may be an issue for people having basic NAS, doing well for what they have been built, nothing else !

Just imagine a SB with basic DLNA "plugin", it would be able to give basic access to music stored on DLNA compliant platforms...
