It would not just be the controller, obviously anything you want to control with it would also have to be via that server. So that would be the Receivers and Booms or Classics that you want to control with it.

Alternatively - if you just need 7.4 to run a Radio - you could set up one server just for that and another one running 7.3.3 for all the other devices. That would mean that you could not use the Controller with the Radio, but I would not think that was any great hardship.

Personally I will be sticking with 7.3.3 as I listen via the headphone socket a lot and would not want to lose that function. I also do not plan on gettng a Radio any time soon.

For me, the stability of the system is MUCH more important than the look of the interface or the speed of database functions. Me, and my family, are now really enjoying the Duet now that 7.3.3 has brought some real stability to the system and all the functions appear to be working as intended. I am happy to say I have had not one networking glitch, buffering message, red or blue icon on either of my Recievers or the Controller since I installed 7.3.3. If it ain't broke I don't intend to do any fixin' for some while!

BTW, what is SBS 8.0? Do you mean SqueezeCenter 8.0? Do you have any idea what the future plans of Logitech are for SqueezeCenter beyond 7.4?

SBS = Squeezebox Server, the new name for SC as of 7.4 (and for now, we're assuming the name will hold through at least 8.0).

The software roadmap is in the wiki: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SoftwareRoadmap. I'm not sure how up to date it is, but if you want to know what's planned for 8.0 and beyond there is also plenty of discussion in the beta and developers forums.

Re hanging on to 7.3.3, don't forget that there is also the issue of firmware upgrades/downgrades if you go back and forth between SC/SBS and SN. SN will generally be running the latest official release.

My family also values stability in the SB system, so I did as radish suggests and set up a 2nd server for 7.4, which is actually a virtual machine (via Sun's VirtualBox software) running on the same physical machine as my SC 7.3.3. Some players *and* SBCs are on 7.3.3, and some are on 7.4. Granted, this only works if you have multiple SBCs as well as multiple players. And eventually the family will have to come around to 7.4. Of course, a drawback of the two-parallel-versions approach is that you can't sync across the two servers.
Nothing high-end, but music anywhere I want it, and it's 100% wind powered. MSI single-core Atom mini-desktop (Debian Squeeze 6.0.x) feeding: Living room: SB Touch > NAD C325 BEE > Vandersteen 1; Kitchen/Dining: SB2 > AudioSource Amp100 > 2 pair of Polk RC60i; Basement: SB2 > JVC JA-S44 > ESS Tempest LS8; Bedroom: SB Radio; Study: Squeezelite local player > Klipsch ProMedia 2.0; Backyard deck: SB Receiver > AudioSource Amp100 > Polk Atrium 45; Kid's bedroom: Boom; Roaming controllers: Retina iPad with Squeezepad & iPeng, iPod touch with iPeng, 3 SB Duet Controllers, various SB infrared remotes, Nokia N800; In the bullpen (boxed up and ready to use if one of the above quits): SB3 and one more SB Receiver

Thanks for clearing that up, and for the link to the roadmap.

I never use SN. We listen to music via a server, a NAS which is on 24/7, and to Napster, BBC iPlayer and other internet radio stations. This is all available via SC 7.3.3 so have never felt the need to experiment with SN.

Crikey! That all sounds very complicated. I will definitely be waiting until all the glitches are ironed out of SBS before I do the upgrade ;-)

Your system looks awesome, by the way. I presume because of the Royal "we" in the first paragraph of your post and the fact that you have got the Touch and Radio already that you are a Logitech employee. How are you getting on with the new devices?

Not half as complicated as trying to make sure that my wife doesn't pick up the "wrong" SBC and start asking where all the familiar menus went.... For a long time I just ran a single server and frequently ran beta versions of SC on it, but the rest of the family never signed on to beta test, which is why I have the two-server system now. After a new release I'll sometimes go back to a single server, but then Logitech always comes up with some new feature/toy that I want to try out, but without subjecting the family to nightly software/firmware updates, and I'm back to the two-server arrangement.

No, I'm not a Logitech employee, just a very lucky beta tester. And the 'Royal we' is not necessarily anything more than iPhone (who made the first reference to SBS in this thread) and me. I'm really liking both the Touch and the Radio. For me the Touch is a much more exciting addition to the line than the Radio, especially because I already have a Boom in the bedroom and the very restrictive IT policy at work makes it not worth the hassle to take an SB to the office. I am waiting for all the glitches to be ironed before I figure out exactly where I'm going to place them.

    Hi everyone,

I recently bought a duet and have been getting to grips with setting it up as I want it. One reason for buying the duet was so I could have the receiver in the living room, but use the controller as a secondary player in the kitchen (plugged into a Tivoli radio). The main issues I had with 7.3.3 were accessing SN via the controller (it just didn't detect SN, so I couldn't connect. Never sorted this out), and getting the headphone socket to work reliably. The headphone switcher applet sorted the second issue a treat!

Then I upgraded to 7.4 in the hope that i would be able to access mysqueezebox.com (formerly SN). This worked, BUT... I now have the same glitchy playback on the controller discussed in this thread whether I'm listening to mysqueezebox, SBS or MP3 files (not got round to buying a server and ripping everything to flac).

I'm listening to BBC 6music via SBS at the moment. It started off very glitchy, but has improved (though by no means perfect).

I have attempted to install the headphone switcher in 7.4 and got as far as selecting 'install' within the applet installer on the controller (on the 'advanced' menu). However, I can't then find the headphone switcher in any of the menus after that. Am I doing something wrong?

Music via the controller is very 'choppy' in 7.4. The good thing is that they have promised to bring 7.4.1 ASAP with a solution (hopefully a good one) for this issue.

First, check if the headphone switch plugin is still needed (here 7.4 switches automatically without plugin).

Unfortunately, my controller isn't switching automatically. It's playing from the headphone socket and the speaker simultaneously. I think I may need to install the headphone switcher. It's a shame this isn't all integrated into the basic features of the duet!

Now I know I'm not switching to 7.4...

The entire reason I was attracted to the DUET (first of my SB purchases) was the Controller and the hopes of getting XM Radio on the thing. I've had almost perfect functionality since 7.3 of the headphone feature and use it constantly. I use it outside Sunday morning so as not to bother my neighbors, I use it on my treadmill by plugging it in to a set of PC speakers, I use it walking the dog and have even used it cutting the grass. On the other hand I have very little use for the junk on SN. I was bummed about the new display layout, but no headphones!! I don't understand how they can have it working for so long and not have it be an official part of the product until 8.0. I'm not sure I believe they will actually do it then. I AIN'T SWITCHING!!

Richard commited a potential fix to the audio playback yesterday for the 7.4.1 version.
I might be able to test this version tomorrow (if I get to download it) to see if this fixes things for me.
Did you know: SqueezePlayer will stream all your music to your Android device. Take your music everywhere!
Remote Control + Streaming to your iPad? Squeezebox + iPad = SqueezePad
