Choose one thread for the discussion and stay with that.

Advice #2 is choose one of the options suggested by the SSODS installation. I've removed the SSODS installation on my LinkStation, and I don't remember if it has a simple text editor such as nano or pico for creating the file in option (b), so I'll take option (a).

The following commands need to be done as root/superuser

    1) add the group ssods

    groupadd ssods

    2) add the user ssods, assigning it to the group ssods

    useradd -g ssods ssods

For now don't worry about the permissions. Your current setup gives too many permissions, in that it gives everyone permission to write (hence the 'w') to that directory. Once you get it working you should change that so that only the folder owner has write permission. You can do that with the command (while logged in as root):

    chmod 755 /opt

Thanks for the help aubuti and simon - finally got it installed and working.

    Best Wishes

    Ssods

I'm at the stage where I have loaded my ip address:9909 in my browser and have downloaded squeeze center in my PC hard drive. When I try to upload the file I get the message that The connection was reset when the page was loading. I tried the alternate way to copy the file to /tmp directory under root but it tells me there in not enough space for the file even though I was able to copy to a tmp file under ssods4 (which is where I thought it was supposed to be first). I've tried deleting some files to free up space to no avail. I'm not a very experienced Linux user.
Can you help me? I'm almost there.

    Ssods

I forgot to say that my Windows firewall is off. I've now managed to copy logitechmediaserver-7.7.2.tgz into /tmp but the SSOXX page still does not see it. I also tried using tar on this file but I get the message

tar: This does not look like a tar archive
    tar: Skipping to next header
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

I'm out of ideas now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Simon,

You are correct. I have switched to SSODS with Squeezebox Server 7.6.2 on my own LinkStations. It's even easier to install than my "Even Easier" instructions in this thread.

    Problem with SSODS

    Tiredlegs

You helped me a lot before with ikpg installation method for which I was very grateful. Have you seen my post with the problem of the web page timing out while trying to load the .tgz file? Have you any ideas of the cause of this or do you know the folder/directory to copy the file to so I can do it manually and proceed with the installation?

    Macanucaire (Tom),

Sometimes when you download a .tar file onto a PC, Windows mucks with the file type. I don't know if that's the case with your problem, but before you load the file onto your LinkStation, you could try changing the file extension on the PC from .tgz to .tar.gz or even just .tar

There is a bug in the logitech end with all tar ball files no one has permissions to download them, at least not the current betas.

Thanks for that. I guess I'll wait until the bug is fixed. I found that it was only the logitechmediaserver tarball that could not be loaded. Any chance of a post when the problem is fixed?

    update from 7.3.3

Can anyone advise me on updating from 7.3.3 to the latest version. I have a buffalo Link Station LG-GL Pro and am delighted to have just successfully installed 7.3.3 from the ipkg package as described in "Even Eassier Squeezecenter...". Many thanks for such a useful set of instructions and info. My SBT now says it requires an updated version of Squeezecenter and I am not sure what to do as it states that a dedicated ipkg package is required. Can anyone help? Thanks
