Middle Cyclone - Neko Case's new CD

In case you haven't heard it yet, I highly recommend Neko Case's new CD "Middle Cyclone". It's got everything: good songs, excellent sound and Neko's fantastic voice. The only problem I have with it is that it's so good that Neko will most likely finally achieve the success she so rightly deserves and then she'll be too famous to be a part of The New Pornographers. Such is life: win some, lose some.

+1 for that, although I like "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" more.

TNP never really got me. It would be true loss though if Calexico and M.Ward became so busy backing Neko Case that they stopped releasing their own material...

Great great record. I could do without the frogs though.

Is the sound quality better than "fox confessor" ?

I have fox confessor.. amazing music but I only listen on my PC speakers.

If I put it on on my main hifi I have to hide behind the sofa ;-)
In some tunes her voice breaks up and cracks as an addition to the very sharp 's' sounds etc.

Well i have to buy the new one anyway is it available as flac somewhere legal ? (yes I want to give her money for her music ). I prefer to not fly CD's from overseas it's a total waste

Really, I never noticed cracks. Could you give some specific examples? I'd say that while "Fox Confessor..." is rather heavily processed, "Middle Cyclone" is less so resulting in slightly a dryer sound. Its still on the wet side though, and the sound is closer to "Fox Confessor..." than some of her earlier albums such as "Furnace Room ...". Anyway, If you liked FCBF you wont be wasting your money on MC.

    Don't know about flac-availability, I doubt it...

Didn't do much for me. I found it flat, with a sameness to all the tracks that put me to sleep even before the inexplicable 32 minutes worth of frogs. I had to remove it from the car player to keep me from flatlining and driving into a ditch.

    Jim,

I love reading dissenting opinions especially when, as is yours, they do not attack either the artist or their fans. I suppose that i can understand your feelings and, as always, you are entitled to your opinions. Try listening to The New Pornographers - different songwriter and completely different sound than Neko Case's solo work.

I loved her earlier albums. Just finished listening to Blacklisted, which I like best. I'll give Middle Cyclone a few more spins - maybe it will grow on me.

I've actually found it a record store ? so now I bought a CD.
Sound is ok, music I have not heard it entirely trough by myself yet.
It always takes me a while to form an opinion (unless something is c***p then you know instantly ).
So far it is not bad haven't got to frog part yet ;-).

Well I can sort of understand the 32 min of frogs in one way, you are probably supposed to edit them out, nowadays everybody has to make 74 minutes long albums, which is to long, many classic albums is less than 40 minutes, many songs are just fillers. Or it can be seen as "intermission" do something else for a while and get back here the rest later.

The frogs may have worked as some sort of intermission except for the fact that the frog track closes the CD. My suggestion - delete the frog track from your hard drive after ripping the CD. Rib-bit, rib-bit - kinda remains of what happens when you forgot to lift the tonearm up at the end of an LP on a manual turntable - retro-blip, retro-blip.

(Note: both rib-bit and retro-blip are my versions of what frogs and LP run-outs sound like, YMMV.)
