Is there the same opportunities with transporter as there is with the Squeezebox? Do you just intall the same software? Is it possible to use your Iphone as a remote controller to your Squeezebox? Do you just connect the Transporter to a hard drive as you do with the Squeezebox?
It seems as if there's not much information available about the Squeezebox.

Transporter and Iphone as a remote?
-

This whole forum is about the Squeezebox.
Technically, the transporter is just a "much better" Squeezebox, so you will install the same Software (SqueezeCenter). You do not connect a hard drive directly to your Transporter, you need to install SqueezeCenter on your PC or on a NAS device that supports it (you can find more about which ones do in this forum).
And yes, you can use the iPhone as a remote, there are three AppStore apps out there: iPeng, Squeemote and Squidgy.
I recommend iPeng since I wrote it :-)---

Welcome. Have you looked at the Slim Devices web site and the wiki, especially the Beginner's Guide in the wiki? There is a lot of information there to get you started.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.
The Transporter is just the top of the line Audiophile Squeezebox. It has the extra display, Transnav Knob, and Audiophile electronics, DAC, and power supply.
The Transporter needs an SC host Server/PC to play local music files or a connection over the Internet to SqueezeNetwork. So yes, downloading SC is highly recommended to maximize the Transporter and allow local files to be played.
Yes as long as one downloads one of the three Apps from the App Store. I recommend iPeng.
No Squeezebox or Transporter connects directly to a harddrive. One needs an SC host Server/PC to play local music files. This can be ones main PC, a Server, an NAS box that can run SC, or an old PC running SC or VortexBox.
There is a ton of information on the Sqeezebox and Transporter. There is the Wiki, product web pages, and even the manuals are available for download. Go to www.slimdevices.com and check out all the tabs on the upper right part of the site.iPhone

Thanks for the information. Great forum!
Good to know that it's possible to use the Iphone as a remote to the Transporter. Will Transporter work with the new Apple Time Cabsule? I'm thinking of getting the 500 GB and convert my CD's to Flac.
The whole setup I'm thinking of investing in is:
Iphone as a remote
Logitech Transporter
Apple Time Machine, 500GB
AVI ADM 9.1 active speakers
10" Subwoofer for ADM9.1 speakers
Would that be a possible and good setup? How much would it mean if I substituted the Transporter with a Squeezebox reciever in this setup? After all the AVI is not quite high end but this suggested setup is what I'm able to afford at the most.Last edited by hessel; 2009-04-01 at 01:28.

Just my thoughts without having all your details/reasons
You are going to need a PC/Laptop/Server/NAS that can host/run SqueezeCenter if you want to play local files. If you just have to go with the AVI ADM 9.1s, then I would just get a Classic or Duet. I don't know what country you live in, but if it was me and I lived in the States, I wouldn't spend $2300 on active monitor speakers. I would look at a nice set of Thiel or maybe the Vandersteen Model 2CE Signature IIs. Yes you would have to buy an nice Receiver, but that could be bought with the money saved from not getting the Transporter. Or drop down a level in speakers to a nice set of Thiel CS 1.6 or Vandersteen Model 1Cs with a nice NAD receiver and a Classic.
There are some really nice setup pluses to the AVI ADM 9.1s especially for people with very small rooms or that move around a bunch. But they are still active monitors at the end of the day and for my $2300, I would rather have a nice pair of full range floor standing speakers. If I had a small room or moved a lot, I would save some big bucks and just buy a Squeezebox Classic and a pair of AudioEngine A5s.
If you have a PC already but don't want to tie it up running SC, a Mac Mini and an external USB drive makes a great small setup for hosting SC and your music files. Just borrow the mouse, keyboard, and monitor to setup the Mac Mini and you're listening to music.iPhone

This is really great input. Thank you for your response.
I'm from Europe (Denmark) and I it's not possible to obtain the recommended products Vandersteen, AudioEngine, and Thiel. To get a picture of the budget om dealing with here's the prices:
(I already have an Iphone)
Logitech Transporter, $2220
Squeezebox receiver, $180
AVI ADM 9.1 active speakers, $1600
10" Subwoofer for ADM9.1 speakers, $1100
Alternatively I've been thinking of getting:
Squeezebox receiver
Densen intregreted Amp B-110, $1800
DynAudio Focus 140: $2300
Since I need a NAS-server I've been thinking of RipNas S1000, 1000GB, $1500 but might go for cheaper alternatives.
I live in a very small apartment so floorstanders would not be a possibility, however it's a paradox since I might move to a greater apartment some years from now.
Please check out the AVI ADM 9.1 they have gotten great revievs from many different websites.

I'm currently in a similar situation and I'm considering to get a pair of Adam A7's to go with a Transporter.
http://www.adam-audio.de/studio/
They are studio monitors and have balanced inputs, so with a Transporter you can use relatively simply cabling and you skip all other error sources in the transmission chain.
I did not really try them, yet so if you've got a bit of time left I will probably be able to report back next week.
I did try the A5's with a Sub7 subwoofer but I simply can't get used to that subwoofer sound, they are always either too loud or the bridge takes away all the low frequencies and then I don't have to fill the Colosseum...---

OK, after the dealer tried to talk me into the cheaper ones I tried the A5s (without sub) at home and they are really OK.
A little sharp at the heights and maybe a _little_ lack of bass for classical music, so if you don't mind subs and your room is bigger than, say, 30m2-35m2 then you should try them with a woofer.
But I'll find something negative with _any_ product, so don't let yourself be put off, I bought them, at ~600€ a pair they are quite a deal (you don't need an amp with the transporter!), my old speakers were more expensive and sounded much worse, and those were passive speakers.
I bought a pair.---
