Has anyone used this, it looks like you can move the install files onto a USB and change the BIOS to boot from USB

It might also be good to make 2 partitions on the disc, one for debian and one for your music.
Nearly there Did you have to format the laptop drive outside the HP before using it or does the install take care of that?

yes the debian installer takes care of that, also the partitioning can be done during install.

Had a change of mind and am awaiting a 2Gb DOM to install Debian and SC onto. Borrowed an USB CD drive to install the OS.

Whilst I'm waiting for the DOM to arrive, I'd like to try and install everything on a USB stick. Would I need to set the BIOS to look for USB, plug in the CD and boot up then insert the USB stick after? ie Would it get confused if I plug in both USB stick and CD drive when booting?

just connect them both, make sure in the bios 'boot from usb' is active, either as first or second option. As long as there is nothing on the usb stick it shoul'd not matter. One thing i do remember though is to make sure that the 12V is connceted before inserting the usb devices.

In that case it is easiest to first remove the flash drive, so you can't get conflicting bootup/grub problems. Then restart the thinclient (with a usb stick inserted (minimal 2GB) and install a baisc debian (if you want a desktop you need a 4GB usb stick). I would suggest just the basic debian. Don't forget to change the bios boot sequence to boot from usb.
Got the 2Gb DOM installed, installed Debian from the HP site at
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...&swEnvOID=4020
Tried to install SC and got the same error saying out of disk space! Surely SC should fit after increasing the DOM 1.5Gb.

It is difficult to install anything on the HP image for the thinclient (either linux or winxpe).
Just connect your cdromdrive via usb and install debian using the lenny netinstall cdrom.
