More on tag splitting, but almost a personal preference feeler...
Do most people live with storing artists by the firstname lastname,
or lastname, firstname? I'm talking mainly about popular
(non-classical) music. I'm reorganizing my collection because I
have a mixture of lastname, firstname and firstname lastname,
and it's quite frustrating to have half of an artists music in the
form of "Sinatra, Frank" and the other half to be in the form of
"Frank Sinatra".
As an aside, rescan barfs on the group "The The". I've had to
rename the group to "The Them" so it shows up just as "Them".
I'm avoiding classical music for right now completely. When I get the
simple popular music issues sorted out, I'll turn to the classical stuff.
Thanks,
Paul

I went with Given name, Surname, at least
when I think I know the given, which means Frank Sinarta
and Elton John.
And I throw out "the" which is bad for "the the".
A similar stop list problem is when more "intellegent"
scanners throw out "is, are, was, not" etc.
which does wonders for "don was, not was"
Classical is hopeless so far, I get enough trouble
with pop and jazz.

firstname lastname

I wonder what would happen if you remove "The" from the
server perference that ignores articles.

Bogus freedb/cddb data, inflexible tag standards, and
poor application support make organizing classical music
not much fun at all.

Strange, I have a few songs by The The and there doesn't seem to be any
problem whatsoever.
Be seeing you,

My personal bias is to use the "sort order" tags. My "artist" tag
shows "firstname lastname" but the corresponding sort tag is set for
"lastname, firstname". That way I have a listing that displays as
"Frank Sinatra" between "Simple Minds" and "Single Gun Theory".
Of course if you're using mp3s, you'll need a tagger that either
supports id3v2.4 or which lets you set extension tags. (or the
musicbrainz tagger, of course. which might be really useful if you're
re-tagging stuff anyway.)
Hope that helps

This was filed as a bug long ago, and I was unable to reproduce it myself either.

I tag it all by hand myself. Freedb/cddb doesn't help with composers,
etc.
But I find that now that we have multiple-valued tags (using / for
now, but waiting on a new release I will change to & and stick with
that), things are getting much better.
I tag with multiple TPE<x> frames and TCOM, and that seems to work
nicely.
Now I'm looking for the ability to turn off artists with only a very
limited number of tracks, so I don't get a whole bunch of entries for
uncommon performers....
I still don't have a good handle on organizing complex pieces of
music. The ID3v2 additions seem like they'll handle orchestral music
and chamber music just fine. But not so good for when the Fat Lady
Sings....
