Remove "socketwrapper.exe" to allow SC download?

    Hi folks -

I had a couple of problems yesterday when I attempted to update from 7.2 to 7.3.2. I first got a message telling me that my firewall settings were incorrect, with regard to 3483, and later had some type of error message (that I didn't write down, thinking it somehow unimportant, about socketwrapper.exe.

The result was that SC appeared to be running, but the SB2 and SBR were not functioning on SC. (They were on SN.) I decided that the problem was with the download and install of 7.3.2., so I'd decided to roll back to 7.2.

When I attempt to download and install SC, I get a message now indicating that an error occurred while attempting to delete the existing socketwrapper.exe file: "DeleteFile failed. Code 5. Access denied."

I've done searches, and it appears that the file is needed for Alien, which, right now, I don't care about at all.

Any advice on how to delete the damn file, and get the music back? TIA - pat

socketwrapper is used with a number of transcoding apps not just Alien.

Using Task Manager, check that there are no instances of socketwrapper running that may be preventing it being deleted. Another user reported that there seemed to be multiple socketwrapper processes which should have terminated.

    Thanks bpa -

The answer for me was to hit "ignore" in the SC download warning, assuming that the copy of socketwrapper that obviously existed and could not be deleted was at least current as of 7.2, which I had been running.

Before I did so, however, I changed my firewall settings to add socketwrapper.exe to squeezecenter.exe among programs to be allowed access.(It had not been denominated as such before, when running 6.x and 7.x, however, so I'm still not sure why it became an issue with this attempted upgrade.) Installation then went swimmingly, and I have SC running, although I'm back to 7.2. When I have some time tomorrow, I'll try again to download 7.3.2, and I anticipate success. (As an aside, issues such as this demonstrate why I am reluctant to recommend the Squeeze solution to friends who are not either already computer wizards or unbelievably patient ... or both.)

I'm posting this in hopes that some poor mope who has the problem can search for and find the answer.

What version of Windows are you using ?
Do you have any additional security s/w besides standard Windows firewall.
Were you using a different user id to re-install compared to previous installs ?

I've installed SC on Windows XP & Vista and upgraded/downgraded a number of times while testing AlienBBC and haven't comes across this message - so it would be interesting to find out what could be the reason.

    Hi bpa -

Using XP SP2, no other security, and didn't use a different user ID, so it definitely has me stumped, too. Perhaps it will happen again when I update to 7.3.2 and I'll try to document the problem more thoroughly. Hope not, though, because now I have music back. - Pat

This is exactly how I discovered I had multiple instances of socketwrapper running... access denied while attempting to upgrade to SC 7.4. I had to manually terminate them all before upgrade could proceed.

Tubesguy, have you checked your Task Manager recently?

Have not, but will. Thanks - Pat
