I updated my server to the latest build 7.4-0.1.24538 of SC and my SBR did its own updating (flashed the white light).
Then I browsed my Controller to Firmware update and it showed that the new fw r3699 was available, so I started the upgrade.
It downloads, verifies and restarts, but then it just comes back to where it says r3699 is available and I can go nowhere else from there.
SBC is connected to SC, since when I start playback from the web interface, the box at the bottom of the Controller display appears showing what's playing. Home or back buttons don't do anything besides giving me the bump.
I could keep doing this all day, it seems, without any progress !? What's up?
I did remove the battery for a minute or so, no difference.

Me too
Mine is also doing the same as described above.
From reading the wiki and forums I think the only solution to get past this problem is to copy the jive_7.4_r3699.bin file to an SD card, rename it to jive.bin and apparently there is an option to 'Update from SD Card'. (This file can be found in the /var/lib/squeezecenter/cache folder on a Linux (Debian) box by the way, but I am not sure about Windows)
I have completed the above steps using the only card I had available (an Integral 16GB SDHC card) but I don't get any option to 'update from SD card'. I assume therefore that this card is not compatible with the controller as discussed in the following wiki page http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/ControllerSDCards
This is very annoying as I can now not use the device until the update is completed which I cannot do until I receive my 'compatible' SD card I have had to order.

Using the SD card method, I managed to install an older firmware, which seems to work OK. I'll try updating again when a new one is available. At least the SBR wasn't bricked, which is a relief

This is a known issue and the developers are preparing a new firmware release. In the meantime, there's no real reason to do the SD upgrade - just stick with the older version.

arrrgh
This thing is getting really frustrating. I dont have a SD card, and i cant use my controller due to this firmware problem. It constantly wants to update to r3699.
Anyone knows how to get out of this loop? ive tried to hold down the vol+ key while booting, but it doesnt help
