Hello all,
The situation is as follows:
- router. 192.168.1.1. DHCP range: .2 - .15
- wireless laptop. XP. 192.168.1.5. static.
- SBC. wired to laptop using cross-over cable.
My questions are:
- do I have to enable ICS on the laptop for the SBC to be able to connect (to SN, Internet radio stations, ...)?
- do I have to give the LAN NIC, connected to the SBC, a static IP? If yes, which?
- do I have to give the SBC a static IP? If yes, which?
The laptop also has SC installed.
I found the following thread, but it didnt answer my questions:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53936
I tried various settings on XP and SBC, but just cannot get this to work. (I enabled ICS. Gave the LAN NIC an address of 192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0. And the SBC an address of 192.168.0.66, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.1. Later I tried giving the LAN NIC and SBC unique addresses in the same range as the router, but this also did not work)
Any tips are very welcome

Settings for SBC connected using a cross-over cable?

Depending on your NIC, you may not need the crossover cable. The port on the SB will not compensate for polarity, but some NICs (and many routers) do. For instance, the Linksys WRT-54G do this.
The feature is actually called Auto-MDIX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-MDIX).
You often see folks (including myself) referring to this feature as auto sensing because most of the time, the auto sense feature (which is actually about adjusting speed) is tied to the Auto-MDIX feature. When you enable auto sense, you also enable auto-MDIX. Reading spec for some NICs (eg Intel PWLA8391GT), they refer to this feature in plain language under Line Diagnostics.
If your NIC needs a crossover cable, it shouldn't hurt. But if it doesn't, you are better off using a straight through cable because introduces one less variable into the problem.Last edited by maggior; 2008-12-23 at 09:56. Reason: Duh - router not involved

maggior, thank you for your reply.
Just to clarify my original post: the setup is not my own, I'm trying to help someone else setup his SBC. The person who owns the SBC mentioned to me he has a cross-over cable. Not sure if he also has a normal straight cable to try.
Also, I'm fairly knowledgable about computer's, networking, etc. Just not that knowledgable about SB's yet, hence my posting in the Beginners section
Irrespective of the cable used, do you actually NEED to set the LAN NIC and SBC static when an SBC is connected with a cable to a PC? If so, what would be an example of the correct settings for both? And do you NEED to enable ICS?

OK, understood.
I've never setup the configuration that you are working with, so I can't help you with your questions.
You might want to search the forums here for answers. I seem to recall posts in the past asking about setting up this configuration.Rich
