... u know what, it is laughable but when i think back... it does feel slow the way the dots are moving... speeding it up will probably get ppl to think the search itself is fast, just the amount of data pool is too big thus taking time...

whereas slow dots will imply slow device... irregardless of the data pool...

i think it's using people's natural tendency of assumption of the unknown(the elastic datapool, size unknow and can be streched to fit whatever conclusion ppl make), that is being exploited here ...

goes to show how people are not machines, or rather, machines that are subject to easy manipulation

It's all about impressions. One could compare it to the bad impression
someone makes when they won't even take the trouble
    to properly capitalize their texts.

Back when I was involved with some GUI work, we called this type of thing ETM, or Entertain The Monkey. It started out as little cute animated graphics like pieces of paper moving from one folder to another. It then graduated to marketing hype presented during installation.

The best was back in the days of DOS when the system would crash, yet the progress indicator routine running as a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident - remember those :-) would continue to run.

Having been both developer, user and helpdesk support it is amazing what people think. People like to be told that something is happening and the faster they are told the more they think it's happening.

We have many times proved that slowing down a long process to give status updates make the user think it's going faster and finishing sooner than doing it without updates. Sometime even taking twice as long ie 30 seconds or more going to over a minute by adding in updates had people asking what we had done to make it faster.

A bit like a watched kettle never boils.

Which reminds me of a trick that we used to do when we had visitors to one of our computer rooms. We had about seven racks of an RS232 PBX type switch with the usual status type lights on the front. When ever we had visitors we would switch the whole suite into diagnostic display mode which would run light sweeps in various patterns across all seven 6 foot racks, several hundred LEDS switching on and off. Used to impress them significantly more than the big VAX machines and several microvaxes that were doing the real work that all the RS232 devices were connecting to. They had only one or two flashing lights you see

FYI, starting with r3285, and thus coincident with the first 7.3 firmware pushed out to users with the "fast spinny", firmware downloads should run about 30 seconds faster. MAGIC!

All we need now is some work on the appallingly slow 'please wait' time on controller wakeup...

What we really need is some kind of SqueezeMan. A cartoon character not
unlike the infamous MS Clippy that can wake up, stretch a little, get
out of bed, take a shower and shave so we have something to watch while
    the controller wakes up...

Something that keeps annoying me is that there is no way to skip the
firmware updates on the controller. It's always at an inconvenient time.
You pick up your controller in order to listen to the radio news and the
damn thing tells you that it needs to go through a multi-minute update
first. Or you want to impress your friends and the show gets delayed.
There should really be a cancel button on that. Even Microsoft allows
    you to postpone updates.

    Regards,
    Peter
