Find "high" bandwidth internet radio?

Not exactly audiophile territory, perhaps, but you guys are probably the bunch that cares!

I like browsing around for interesting internet radio stations, but are tired of the low bandwidth of many of them. My threshold for talk shows are usually 64k, and 128k for music. Do you know of any web site that lets me browse only these? I prefer "real" radio stations to the internet-only ones.

Per, there are quite a few higher bit stations around the world.
you don't mention what kind of music you listen to.....
log onto Squeezenetwork and have a browse around and each station will give it's bit-rate.
i have a few stations in my "favourites" like AVRO and Bartok radio who stream at 256k and above. have a look around Per it won't take you long to build up a few favourites of your own.

I just logged into Squeezenetwork, but I cannot see that the bandwidth is published, except for a few stations.

Lets look at Staff Picks / By Genre / News & Talk as an example. This is the beginning of the list:

BBC World Service | UK (32 kbps)
Air America | US (32 kbps)
ABC NewsRadio | AU
Radio France Int'l | FR
National Public Radio | US (20 kbps)
CNN Radio | US
Deutsche Welle | DE

It seems that the bandwidth is entered as text, not a general property of the station. This means that I have to try the stations to realize what bandwith they are using. It was exactly this I would like to avoid.

I was hoping for a site where I could filter the stations on this parameter, as well as others such as language, location and genre.

PS. Thanks for the offer on stations, by the way, but I would feel more comfortable learning to use the fishing gear myself, if you see what I mean.

Try Shoutcast in 7.3, you can sort and filter by bitrate.

You can also find high-quality streams at the Internet Archive. And I believe Paradise Radio has a 192kbps stream

I don't understand. Do you mean in SC or directly on the Shoutcast web site? I tried both, but could not see a filter on bandwidth.

In SC 7.3, go to Internet Radio -> SHOUTcast -> Settings.

go to the home page at the Shoutcast website. There are column headers where the stations are listed. The heading of the right column looks like this;

Bitrate: All | Broadband | 128 | 56 | 28

Click on Broadband, you'll see the stations in descending order of bitrate, starting with 320. Find the one you want, then you can fire it up in the Shoutcast section of SN or SC/SS.

I had the same issue until I discovered AAC+ streams. I find that even 64kbps AAC+ streams sound way better than 128kbps MP3 streams.

Unfortunately, AAC+ is not natively supported on SC and are not available on the SqueezeNetwork. However using the mplayer plugin you can easily get SC to play these streams. For installation details see the wiki:

As I have mentioned before on these forums, my favorite station is Radio Swiss Classic, a 64kbps AACPlus stream. No ads, good sound quality and great programming. I don't even bother with an FM tuner these days.

There is a list of 207 AACPlus stations on www.tuner2.com, with all kinds of genres, with the AAC+ bitrate for each station listed.

Ah, that's why I don't see it! The 7.2 release does not seem to have this feature.
