Lost connection to server and auto-dimming went wonky

This is the second time I have had an issue where the display stopped adjusting properly on the automatic light sensor settings. I'm not sure what triggered it the first time, but I was able to get it back to normal by setting the brightness to manual and then back to automatic for off/on/idle states. This time, I think it happened because I lost connection to Squeezecenter.

Last night I had the sleep timer on when the music abruptly stopped. It was about the time my server does its nightly backups so I figured that's what knocked the Squeezebox offline. I was not able to reconnect to SC until I backed completely out to the set up networking step and then reconnected.

After that. everything appeared to be working fine until I turned off the lights, and the display was WAY brighter than it normally is. Turning the light on and off again, I observed that the display brightness was adjusting... but not to the same dimness that it used to (it went down to about 3 when it normally goes down to about 2). Finally I went into brightness settings, changed all three modes off automatic and back on automatic, and the brightness levels went back to what they used to be in a dark room.

This is all probably too vague for any kind of bug report, but I thought I would post it here in case others had similar experiences that might shed some light (har, har) on the situation.

My auto-brightness has gone wonky 2 more times since I posted this. I wake up in the middle of the night to find the display very bright. The only way to get it back to dimming low again is to reset all three brightness settings and then it works okay for a while again. Very strange. No one else has seen this?

I'm using 7.2.1 from a couple of weeks ago. I guess I'll try a newer version.

I've seen something that might be related. Over the weekend whilst using my Boom in the garage the screen went blank. I assumed that it had lost the network connection and once the buffer was empty the music would stop. The music didn't stop and the Boom still responded to the remote, I could skip to the next track, pause and restart the music. I tried the brightness button on a SB3 remote but this didn't make any difference. I went to the web interface and set the brightness to 5 for all three modes, the display on the Boom came back to life, then I reset the brightness to automatic and it's been fine since.

I've noticed the last couple nights that after I turn my light off, the display on the Boom will flare to brightest (which, in a black room, is pretty bright!) for a few minutes, and then settle down to the appropriate brightness. That's kind of different from what you're reporting, since I don't have to manually remediate. But it's brightness related. Just my two cents.

A few minutes or a few seconds? It does take a few seconds to adjust
to the new room brightness, but if it takes a few minutes, somehting's
wrong.

I'll be more specific - it's about 30 seconds. So, not a few seconds, but not a few minutes either. I observed it last night.

There were some auto-brightness updates to a recent firmware update recently. If you are running 7.2.1 nightlies make sure you have a recent one that includes firmware 33. Then see if the problem persists perhaps.

I'm not running nightlies, but maybe I should be, for testing's sake. I guess...I'm kind of in the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" mode for right now...after a two week fight with AT&T to get my DSL service reconnected...

Might give it a shot this weekend.

The pain lets me know I'm still alive. Plus, I work in IT. So it's more of a continual, dull throb. ;-)
