FYI, I'm not totally sold on this store/retrieve volume feature. Besides the speaker icon spawning from nowhere (I can live with that, in fact it might be better than no hint at all), I hear Coolio sometimes nudges the volume up or down on its own. I use IR blaster, on one of my amps, a single step up or down makes a noticeable difference. Sometimes I have to undo.
Note: I don't remember having an issue with the way things were before, hence a mild appreciation. Still love having Coolio around.4 SB 3 • iPeng (iPhone + iPad) • SqueezeLite • Squeezebox Server 7.6.2 (Debian 6.0) with plugins: CD Player, WaveInput by bpa • IRBlaster by Gwendesign (Felix) • Server Power Control by Gordon Harris • Smart Mix by Michael Herger • PowerSave by Jason Holtzapple • Song Info, Song Lyrics by Erland Isaksson • Just Covers by Tom Kalmijn • WeatherTime by Martin Rehfeld • Local Player, BBC iPlayer, SwitchPlayer by Triode • Auto Dim Display, SaverSwitcher, ContextMenu by Peter Watkins.

Confused.
Does the current version of iPeng include playback by default or is it still an additional cost item? The reason for the confusion is the reference to playback being a £2.99 add-on but a search of the iTunes store for iPeng Playback produces no results.

It's an In-App-Purchase, that's why you don't find it stand-alone in the App Store (it's mentioned on iPeng's store page, though).
You can purchase it under Settings->Enable Playback---

Is it easy to add a spotify button to the toolbar? There doesn't seem to be one available to choose...sorry if that's a dull question...

You need to add Spotify to the main menu first. You do that in MySqueezebox.com or the App Gallery.
