    Before I buy...

    Hello,

My wife asked me a few weeks ago "Can you make it so that I can listen to the computer in the kitchen?". I say "Maybe" and start planning away in my mind. Visions of running speaker wire from the PC to the kitchen via the attic... then I stop and decide to do some research. First finding Windows "Media Center Extenders"... couldn't find any audio-only ones. Finally heard mention of a squeezebox and came here.

SO, what my wife really wants is to listen to a program called PalTalk while she cooks/cleans/"whatever else a houswife does" from the kitchen or living room. I know a Sqeezebox can handle mp3's and such, but can you listen to audio coming Paltalk or other programs? And can you just tell it to stream whatever would ordinarily go to the PC speakers?

    Thanks

    livens

If you gave us the URL to "PalTalk" we could probably tell you.

The best thing about the SqueezeBox is that you can download SqueezeCenter before you buy it, install it, and test everything you want to do with SoftSqueeze.

The Squeezebox Controller emulator isn't ready for normal use yet, but it's getting there.

From what I know of paltalk it's a proprietary program. I don't think you could stream it. Not 100% sure mind you. You probably will need a device that can be used as a separate sound card for streaming to a device. I used to have a philips device that would do this. The only problem with it was that it would stream anything that made sounds on the system. Not a problem if no one was using the computer at the same time. I think they have some newer ones that you can choose what programs use it so only they stream to the device. You still need an amplified speaker system of some sort.
If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use is the rule.

    Thanks for the info.

I doubt it will work, but here is the link to Paltalk Scene:

    http://www.paltalk.com/en/start_chatting.shtml

It looks like my original plan of speaker wire may be my best option But I will also try the emulator just too see...

    Thanks again

The Waveinput plugin ( see http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/WaveInput_plugin ) copies whatever is coming out of the PC speaker to SqueezeCenter and so can be played out of an SqueezeBox. It is Windows only and it may not work on some PC audio hardware .

So you could have Paltalk playing on PC and a user could choose from the SB the stored music, normal internet-radio or Wavinput which in this case it Paltalk.

I think you would need to synchronise players to have it play ou tof more than one SB.
