Ok, I have added a few news RSS feeds from the Advanced tab, but they do
not show up neither in the web interface nor on the Controller. On the
Advanced tab page it says "Click on the Change button when you are done"
but I can not see such a button.
The new entries have been saved to /var/lib/squeezecenter/prefs/plugin/rssnews.prefs
and the header of that file looks like this:
_ts_feeds: 1209417902
_ts_items_per_feed: 1200006174
_ts_modified: 1209416828
_version: 2
I also have an infobrowser.ompl file in the playlist directory, but
that one has not been updated.
I have restarted squeezecenter once but that did not help.

You add news feeds to the RSS news feeds ticker for the screen saver
You add news feeds to Infobrowser settings to view news feed on Infobrowser.

Ah, thanks! Works well

But, I do not think it is particularly obvious to have two different forms
for entering this. I can not have been the only one fooled by this and most
people do not ask.

The menu options are "RSS News Ticker " and "Infobrowser" and there Plugins and Advanced settings for Both "Rss News Ticker" and "Infobrowser".
How else can they be more different ?

Well, I looked for RSS and found it, I did not even consider "information browser" and had
to ask in the end to get it working. I assume I am not the only one. It is just an observation.
I am not going to start a big argument about this though.

I'm not trying to start an argument but trying to find out what other info should be added to make the difference clearer ? Both Plugins handle RSS but for different end-uses.
The name "RSS News Ticker" is usually only seen on SBs screen (or WebUI screensave setting); it is not a menu option on SBC so I think the issue of confusion has only been arising from SBC users. However SBC users are accessing RSS from Infobrowser menu.

FWIW, way back when I first switched to a 7.0 nightly I had the same reaction. I thought "Hmm, Information Browser, what the heck is that? I wonder what kind of information I can browse?" I could be wrong, but I'm not aware of any mainstream RSS feed reader that uses this terminology.
Personally, I prefer not to read RSS feeds on an SB display, an SBC or in SC, so I just disabled it and didn't bother to raise the issue...

Infobrowser is a general purpose text display plugin which can display much more than RSS. Currently there are addons to display
- new forum entries
- uk tv guide
- BBC radio schedules for all stations - national & local.
- playlists for a number of radio stations such as sky.fm, somafm and Radio Paradise
as well as RSS feeds

Interesting, thanks. I stand corrected. I'll check it out more when I have a chance.
