The only differences would be with the initial freelink installation.

Thanks. I looked at the FreeLink wiki. I have some questions.

1) The Wiki instructs to replace LSUpdater.exe and LSUpdater.ini in the FreeLink_arm901.0rev2.zip with versions from LinkStation Live firmware versions 1.03 or 2.03. At the Buffalo site, only versions 1.06 and 2.06 are available for download. Are these ok to use? In particular, I want to preserve the WebAccess functionality of the LinkStation Live.
2) After installing FreeLink, to login, can one use telnet instead of either SSH or PuTTY? What is the difference between PuTTY and PuTTYtel?
3) Will the password for login "root" still be "lspro", or the corresponding "lslive"?
4) What is Webmin compared to the Linkstation configurer that I have today? Will I lose the Linkstation configurer by installing FreeLink?
5) Should I update the kernel? (What does this mean?)
6) My LinkStation will be on a personal (home) network, WEP-encrypted, behind a firewall. I will only ever log-in to the LinkStation from another machine inside the firewall, and if necessary, can always plan to do this with a direct ethernet connection between the two, isolated from any network at all. Do I still need to "Create unique SSH server keys" to prevent "Man-in-the-middle" attacks?

1) I'm not too sure about the versions -- you might want check with the linkstationwiki forums on that specific detail. Do note however that flashing with FreeLink you WILL lose the standard web interface. You can install webmin, but it's not the same.
2) You can use telnet, but you have to enable it after installing, and you'll need ssh in order to do so. The difference is ssh is secure (encrypted); telnet is plaintext.
3) Dunno about the password, but you've got a 50/50 chance of getting it on the first try.
4) Webmin does much more, but is also *much* more complex.
5) Just use the kernel that comes with freelink. It's fine -- there's no need to upgrade.
6) No, you don't need to. But it only takes about 15 seconds, so you might as well.

I followed the Farallon's instructions on a linkstation live and it worked well.

I also installed SC7.01 on LS Live+Freelink according to farallon's guide. Running fine as I type.

Can either chalkandtalk or oam answer the questions I posed, specifically:

1) Which firmware version did you use? Did you download it from the Buffalo site or elsewhere?
2) Did you use telnet or SSH - if the latter, can you explain where you got it from and how you installed it?3) What password did you use for login "root"?
4) How are you getting by without the Linkstation configurer?
5) What other modifications did you make afterwards, such as updating the kernal or changing settings as suggested in http://buffalo.nas-central.org/index...tion_PRO/LIVE?

Hi!

1. I used Buffalo's official 2.06 firmware as basis and then installed Freelink according to these instructions:

2. Freelink comes with SSH so I use a windows program called PuTTY to login to the box after Freelink was installed. The root's password was lspro.

4. I installed also Webmin to the box. With that you can configure everything with a web interface. Only thing I sometimes miss is the internet access to my shared folders but I can live without it.

5. Did everything else the steps in the Freelink guide except update kernel, repartition and static IP address (I have my adsl router configured to give always the same ip address to my LSLive anyway).

I remember seeing reports that people have succefully installed Squeezecenter also to a stock firmware Linkstation. In case Freelink doesn't appeal to you.

Ouch. That may kill the whole idea for me. I probably just will have to get by with uploading my music to MP3Tunes/Locker and accessing via SqueezeNetwork.
