    To advisers to original post.

Isn't this an ownership and/or making the thing executable problem?

    problem installing slimserver/squeezecenter on ubuntu

I am an ubuntu newbie - but I found that when I tried to install either slimserver or squeezecenter, neither of them would appear in my list of installed applications. Synaptic thinks it is installed - but I just can't find or access it anywhere.

I thought I was going mad and couldn;t even install an application - Loaded VLC to check at least I could do that, which I could.

Is there some problem with slimserver 7.0 or squeezecenter on ubuntu, or is it a lack of competence on my part?

Can't get Slimserver working with Ubuntu Gutsy

    Hi,

I'm still having problems with this.

I had Slimserver 6.3.0-5 (which I downloaded via Synaptic) but I found that, although my Squeezebox 3 saw the server and correctly displayed the tracks, none of the tracks (flac or wav) would actually play. I reverted back to a windows machine to check the Squeezebox is OK, which it is.

So I tried to update to Slimserver 7.0 by including the required software source, and then entering "sudo apt-get install slimserver" in the terminal.

However when I try this, a screen appears with the following (requiring me to click ok (which I can't figure out how to do from within the terminal):

    Package configuration
    Configuring slimserver │
│ The Slimdevices SliMP3, SqueezeBox, and SqueezeBox 2/3 hardware Audio ↑
│ players use flash-upgradable firmware which is not included in this ▮
│ package, for copyright reasons. The firmware changes with nearly every ▒
│ release of SlimServer, and must be kept up-to-date. If out-of-date ▒
│ firmware is found, SlimServer will need to update it. ▒
    │ ▒
│ You can set the Debian SlimServer package to download a complete set of ▒
│ firmware images from the SlimDevices SubVersion server as part of its ▒
│ installation process. As the SlimServer package is upgraded, new ▒
│ firmware images will be downloaded as part of the upgrade. If you choose ▒
│ not to do this, then Slimserver will attempt the download firmware if ▒
│ and when it determines that a player upgrade is needed. ▒
    │ ▒
│ You should say accept this option if you intend to use SlimServer with ↓

    │ <Ok>

So I am a bit stuck. Any ideas as to how to progress much appreciated. Thanks.

    Problem with Debian repository?

I'm trying to install Squeezecenter using:

    sudo apt-get install squeezecenter

but I get the following output:

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package squeezecenter

Is there a problem with the repository at the moment?

    (I'm using Ubuntu Gutsy)

    --------
UPDATE: I've fixed this now. I had both stable and unstable defined in my sources list.

Solution from Logitech to Ubuntu install problem

In case it is useful to anyone else - here is the solution an extremely helpful person at Logitech customer support gave to my problem installing Slimserver/Squeezecenter on Ubuntu 7.10.

    Their solution was:

Try this link for the debian download.

    http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads...Center_v7.0.0/

You are going to want to download and run the last file on here.

It just worked. You get the new Squeezecentre interface, and it all seems fine and dandy.

This is probably due to the change in name. It looks like you tried to reinstall SlimServer 6.3.0-5, the version in the Debian/Ubuntu repos which is modified to remove proprietary firmware...and doesn't work!

What you actually wanted was SqueezeCenter, but when you asked to install SlimServer it went to the only SlimServer that still exists in the repos, the Debian/Ubuntu one, because SlimServer no longer exists in the Logitech SMS repos.

I just tried this on a Ubuntu JeOS server install in VMWare using apt-get and it worked using deb http://debian.slimdevices.com stable main added to my sources list.

I installed SlimServer first, then did apt-get remove to uninstall it, and finally apt-get install squeezecenter. It complained about some dependencies but went and got them. Make sure you do an apt-get update before trying to install. Even if the files are on the server, your machine will install from the apt-cache list so you need to update that in order to install it.
