    Ripping vinyl

    Thanks Roy,

I'll try these ideas out and see if I can get a decent recording.

PS do you use a filter to remove pops and clicks caused by scratches.
Presumably there is some element of lossiness with such a filter?

Me, too, though the load is slowly lightening. (I started my vinyl rip
    project last week)

That is a ground loop problem. There are several possible causes, but
the biggest one is having the computer and stereo receiver plugged into
different AC circuits. Make sure that you're on the same circuit, and
try reversing the AC plug if possible. The next culprit is cabling,
especially if there's a mini-plug going into the sound card. Also, some
phono cartridges have a little ground strap connecting one ground pin to
the metal tonearm shell. If you have this, try removing it. I've had
    that bite me before.

Mini-disc uses ATRAC compression, doesn't it? Not a good idea. ATRAC is
lossy, so you would lose quality twice (similar to re-encoding an MP3
from a lower to a higher bitrate).

Not just yet. A lot of my vinyl is in pretty good shape, so I'll
consider filtering on a case-by-case basis. I've already granted that
my recordings won't be quite a "digital remaster" and I'm willing to
    accept an occasional imperfection.
