I've set the sound options to "None" but the boot and shutdown sound of the SqueezeBox Controller is still there.
I suppose I'm just missing some obvious option, or is there no way to disable the boot/shutdown sound ?

ssh to the controller and delete
/usr/share/jive/applets/DefaultSkin/sounds/shutdown.wav
/usr/share/jive/jive/splash.wav

probably a bit of both, and maybe a reason or two more. It's a new
product. It's very featureful when you think back to slimp3/
slimserver3.0. Lots more to do and it all need to be done one at a
time.

settings->advanced->remote login.
check the box
then from a terminal (or windows ssh client):
ssh <ip> -l root
<IP> is the ip address of the controller, shown in the popup when you
enable remote login.
password is given in the popup.

If you are trying to connect from a windows box, your two best friends are:

Great, but won't the (daily) firmware update reinstall the sound in all its glory?

Not unless you do a factory reset. Local modifications only affect
the "overlay" file system, so changes will persist across installs.

Sound location appears to have moved
With this being one of the top Google results for "squeezebox controller boot sound" I figured it worth pointing out that the sounds now seem to be in /usr/share/jive/applets/SetupSoundEffects/sounds/ . My experience was that even after renaming the shutdown sound, it wasn't until after a reboot that the change stuck.
