So I decided to have an early night and went to bed at 10:30. At about 2:45 I was woken up by loud music so I started muttering about people and car radios. I looked out of the window and nobody was there, then I realised the music was coming from downstairs. It seems that my Squeezebox had unpaused itself!
Could this have been caused by the new power saving modes in the Controller? it's never happened before and the cabinet doors were shut so it wasn't stray IR signals.

This is a known issue. There was a couple of threads in general discussion about this. Have you got an open firewall to allow access to SC from the internet.

Not that I know of but I'll check. I do have the server set to only allow local addresses though.

I think the conclusion of some of the threads was that pausing random play might cause this kind of behaviour. Thought it was fixed in latest 7.0 though...

Well I had paused Random play so maybe that was it. I was using the nightly from the 12th though.
I've also tried connecting in from an external network and not been able to so who knows? maybe a ghost was checking out the Jive :-)

I wasn't aware that it was related to pausing Random play. I'd like to get a link to that thread.
This has happened to me when I have left Random mix paused.
One time the SB was playing for about 3 straight days and nights after the I left the thing paused over a long weekend and came back on Monday to find music playing in the house.

Hmm, knew you were going to ask me for a link. All I can find is this one but I remember another thread with a better explanation of why this might happen on random play. Will have a hunt around.
