    $199 Dell server

This looks like a nice system to use as a slimserver, especially with Linux. You can bump the RAM up to 1GB for an extra $29. The deal expires tomorrow:

That will make a nice NAS. I'd spring the extra $30

You may also want to upgrade to the Intel Pro NIC if you're going to be ripping or copying music to it over a network. The Intel is capable of jumbo frames, which the stock NIC may not be, and over hundreds of CDs, it could save you a bit of time.

Also, I have the feeling the box may be loud, so you'll want to stash it somewhere the noise won't bother anyone.

    This is a fantastic deal!
I have one at work - it is a big heavy box - can't tell how loud it is as its sitting with a bunch of other machines.

Its fast - we use it as a VM hosting server.

    Another Option ...

    Dell Refurb PC -

    I just bought a refurb Dell Inspiron 531s - A slim desktop/minitower unit for $309 -

2.1 GHZ AMD dual core processor
    2 GB RAM
    500 GB Hard Drive
    Modem
    Mouse
    Keyboard
On the mobo - NVidia video, 1GHZ NIC, 7.1 channel sound
    Win Vista Basic
It is whisper quiet, even when rescanning the SC 7 library.

I believe that if you upgrade the $199 deal to this config, you will be over $700. My unit looks brand new and comes with a Dell full 1-year warranty.

They also have the 530(Intel) and 531(AMD) Minitower series that start at $249 for an Intel 1.6 GHZ processor, a 250 GB HD, 1 Gb of RAM, a modem, built in video, audio and NIC, and Win Vista Basic. The 530/531 is more plentiful than the 530s/531s (small form factor case). Deals come and go quickly, but more come on line quickly, also.

I could not be happier with my unit as a dedicated server for SC 7. Go to the Dell site and click on Desktops for Home/Office - An option for Dell Outlet will appear in the top menu. Go to Outlet Desktops and find the Inspiron series - click thru until you get to the configurator - You can filter for the options you want or look at all of the ones available in the outlet.

    Thanks for listening.
