I'm thinking of building a dedicated Linux machine purely to run SqueezeCenter, and as a Jive beta tester I need to install nightly releases sometimes. I don't want to get involved in building SC nightlies from the source code.
I see that Slim Devices offers pre-built Red Hat and Debian packages for download. Is there a list anywhere that explains which distros these packages can be used with?

Not sure there is a link explicitly discussing your question, but there is a debian wiki @ http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?DebianPackage. The debian build should work on any debian based distro eg Debian, Ubuntu (in all its variants), Mepis, Mint etc.
Not sure what other distros use the RPM package format, but a simple google search should answer your question.

Redhat RPM packages can be installed on distros like Fedora, CentOS, etc.

I've found Ubuntu to be a good choice for me (having started with Slackware 12 years ago, and used RedHat and Gentoo in the meantime)
For SqueezeCenter, I go straight to the SVN repository. It's quick and easy to upgrade to the latest:
I think when SC7 is released properly, I might change to using packages, but while it's still beta I like to be able to easily get the most up-to-date sources. And it's easy to revert too, if something breaks!Code:/etc/init.d/slimserver stop cd /opt/slimserver svn up /etc/init.d/slimserver start

BTW, with respect to the OP's question, I'd recommend ubuntu server edition. It would be perfect for a squeezecenter host OS. Use the latest which is version 7.10 atm.

Ubuntu 7.10 is great !
I also tried clarkconnect, but ubuntu is way easier to manage. Just enable the Remote Desktop and you are done. You can unplug screen, keyboard etc.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Looks like Ubuntu may be the way to go. I'm a Linux newbie, but I have a lot of Unix System V experience from about 10 years ago, and back in the dark ages ran SlimServer on FreeBSD. So I'm hoping there won't be too much of a culture shock.

Mandriva is from Red Hat so it can use the rpm's for Red Hat.
I would not recommend Mandriva, for other reasons.
I would suggest either Ubuntu or pure Debian.
My SC is pure debian. I like it a lot. It doesn't have all the eyecandy
that Ubuntu has.

Instant Squeezecenter
Instant Squeezecenter (SC7 only) by Fletch is worth a try. Fully self contained and slimmed down.
Have a look at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=40818 for all the details.
I'm using this with VMware at the moment, but it runs with no problems, and uses yum to update the nightly rpm.P2 266MHz, ubuntu server 10.04 SBS 7.6.0 - r31284
