    Kind of Blue

    I'd like to add the classic Mile Davis CD to my collection but the copy I recently heard had a distinct buzz around the horns in the beginning section of the "So What?" There are a number of re-issues and versions of this release to choose from. What are your opinions on the best version of this classic?

    I'm not hung up on strict authenticity as I am sound quality. I didn't grow up listening to it, so I have no pre-conceived notion of what it must sound like. In other words, the fact that some versions are pitch inaccurate and some aren't doesn't really matter to me. It also doesn't matter if they include extra tracks - in fact, I think that's generally a good thing. It's more about the best quality presentation of the material.

    Bummer. Any thoughts on the best version given they all have this flaw?

    I like the Columbia DualDisc release.

    It's not a flaw. It's reed noise from one of the sax players. It's in the right-hand channel, so probably Cannonball. Here's a bit of discussion on the topic:
