Can it be done? I want my SB+ to come first in the list (I hardly ever control the kitchen one from the web interface), but despite renaming (naively believing the order could be alphabetical), SlimServer doggedly remembers the order I bought them in!
Any thoughts?

Slimserver may list the players in the order they are listed in the preferences file.
Try to move the relevant client section further up in the file.
Stop slimserver before you edit!
Not sure if such a manual change is persistent, though. Slimserver could rewrite the file with the old order.

Sorry, assumed someone with your post count knew where that file was

SlimServer.pref can most commonly be found here
C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server on a windows machine

They are listed in order of the devices' MAC addresses which are probably
roughly sequential according to the date of manufacture. Many (most?) skins
will remember the last device you used and automatically select that one for
you when the browser is opened.

Then it's probably down to how my browser forgets everything every night, meaning I have to log in to everything afresh and so on, despite all requests to remember cookies etc. This has plagued me for a while; I think I need to reformat my machine with a very large axe.
Slimpy, an outrageous assumption
Rest assured that I have no idea how to change a tyre, oil or anything else on my car. Petrol and washer fluid, for everything else there's Mastercard!

It's not exactly what you asked for, but you can make bookmarks or shortcuts to point your browser to a specific player. I had forgotten about this until I saw a similar recent thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=37964
