    Question Wait for it...

You need to give it a few minutes after you re-start. If it hasn't unpakced then you may still need the All-in-one-update but I did mine and it didn't

Once it's installed once successfully you should be able to telnet in and see slimserver directory files in \share\MD0_DATA\ubuntu\opt\slimserver

In the Public\updates folder there should be two files, one called updater.log and the other called errors.log. Is there anything in either of them that could shed some light on what's going wrong?

If you telnet onto the QNAP and type "ps" (without the quotes) do you see this entry: /usr/bin/perl -w /opt/slimserver/slimserver.pl ?

I see nothing about perl in the list created by ps.. the update log says that all updates have been completed... I am running into another problem now.. I can not reformat the drives. I tried to reformat and try again by not I can not do anything.. I tried resetting to default settings and changing to Raid 0 then back to 1 but nothing... I am going to try to reinstall the firmware next

Have you tried running the commands on this post to enable you to reformat and start again? http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpo...28&postcount=4

You shouldn't need to re-install the firmware, but there's no harm in giving it a go.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot one bit, if you can't see that process running under "ps" then slimserver is not running.

hmm thanks I will try both reinstalling the firmware and if that does not work look at the commands. I do not want to end up reformatting but not be able to do it later. and just to make sure my comment on the other thread was just to let you know all the facts.. thanks for your help, heading off to see spiderman 3

Just tried both and I still can not format the hard drives... this installation did not go well at all.. I think I am going to have to remove the drives and format them in another computer.

    I managed it like this

Discovered a combination that worked on the fourth try after reading through install.sh to see what it does.

First I extracted all the files from install_ts101201.rar into the Public share.

I then created a folder "updates" and copied into it all the extracted files except ubuntu-hoary-chroot-mpc82xx-2006-07-23-release-2.1.tar.gz.

I then ran install.sh on a telnet session as instructed, and when that ended, typed "reboot" and it was all fine.

    Problems I found:
The instructions do not explain that all the slimserver files need to be in /updates when you reboot. Only the ubuntu file should be in the root of Public.

If you install once, then realise that the install files were in the wrong place and run install again, you get an error which I didn't track down, so in the end I got quite practiced at killing the installation and reformatting the disk. You must, each time you want to format the disk after a failed installation run the following in a telnet session:

    mkdir /tmp/flash
    mount /dev/mtdblock4 /tmp/flash
    rm /tmp/flash/autorun.sh
    umount /tmp/flash
    reboot

autorun.sh mounts ubuntu (presumably to run slimserver) but seems to lock out the facility to re-initialise your drive, so deleting it via the above procedure is essential to switch the TS unit back to its standard firmware.

    er. Help needed.

I don't think those instructions are that clear at all. A bit of help needed.
    What i've done so far:

    1) installed the newest firmware from QNAP and can telnet to the box.

    2) downloaded the install....rar file from progressive. I un-rar'd this using 'Newtoolz' and then copied the extracted files to the public directory on the QNAP.

    3) Then it all starts to go pear shaped. after inputting ./install.sh i get the following messages (some date info edited for brevity):

Looking for host pool.ntp.org and service ntp
Error - name or service no known.
    ntpdate : can't find host pool.ntp.org
ntodate no servers can be used, exiting.
    INstalling to /share/hda data
    createing directories
    installing ubuntu image
    /share/hda_data/ubuntu
    ./install.sh: 69: echo:not found
    ./install.sh: 73: not found
    ./install.sh 75: grep:not found
    ./install.sh 102: [:not found
    ./install.sh 102: echo:not found {repeated 10+ times)
    make2fs: cant load library 'libgcc_s.so.1
    ./install.sh 108 cp:not found
    ./install.sh 120: not found

After that i tried "reboot" and got a 'not found' message

It looks to me as if the install has failed but i don't know why or what to try next.

Ok, I put a fresh disc in there and tried again and it seems to have worked installing ubuntu - no error messages this time. However, i still can't get to slimserver. i've tried moving all the files except the install and ubuntu to the 'updates' folder and rebooting but that hasn't made any difference.
