eac & apple lossless codec - how to please

    hi i read this guide:

    http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?EACInstall

    and it says:

Step 4. Then install Flac from the installer. If you don’t want WinAmp installed, select No. Otherwise installation should be straightforward.

But when I went to the eac web site and downloaded and ran the install I saw no options to add flac. So how do I get all the codecs?

Specifially I really want to setup the apple lossless (alac) encoder in eac. In the forums it says that this encoder is part of a pack you can download from the eac site but annoyingly does not give the actual link and I can not find it.

All i can find is a windows compile of alac.exe from a web site called crazynet which is a reverse engineered apple lossless decoder by David Hammerton. I still can't find an encoder. Urgh god I hate computers and crappy web sites.

Please help me find the command line alac encoder!

    Many Thanks

The codes are not on the EAC website - you must download them from their
    various sources.

    e.g. flac: http://flac.sf.net

Not sure from where you can get alac - google is your friend!

Not that surprising, as ALAC is a proprietory format bundled with Itunes by Apple. Apple haven't made the encoder generally available, so people have had to reverse engineer it with varing degrees of success. You're probably aware of all this, but explains why it's not so easy to find.

That said, I seem to recall that both Foobar and and dbPoweramp have beta ALAC encoders? May be worth checking those out.

HydrogenAudio forums would be a good place to ask if you don't get any joy here.

    unfortunately

unfortunately that does not contain a command line encoder - just a dll that is called from dbpoweramp. Not sure how dbpoweramp and foobar got this since i see no encoding source code on the net - only decoding source code written by david hamilton.

been learning about it here: http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/showthre...3513#post63513

also foobar have a dll not an executable and have these comments:

ALAC decoding : This component has known stability issues (random crashes during decoding). We recommend using lossless formats with official opensource decoders available instead. (see http://www.foobar2000.org/components/index.html)

i could write a wrapper around the dbpoweramp dll with a command line interface but it would be a bit naughty unless thye too were being naughty!

I really want to add apple apple lossless encoding to my www.exceltagger.com project. I keep my music in flac and want to convert it all for the ipod including tags & album art. dbpoweramp does not support album art but it's vital so i have to write. I can use the nero aac encoder but thought it would be better to export as lossless and allow itunes to do the aac conversion (they would do the best job). Does itunes read id3 tags on wav files? ..could go that route as well maybe.. Or if I understood the m4a format I could probably embed a wav in an m4a file. All the user needs is his music lossless with tags and art in itunes and then he can convert for himself.

I was thinking of the discussion in the thread that explains why the command line encoder isn't available.

"We are not allowed by license to open it, or sub-license."

    sorry

ah yes i see that now on page:

    http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/printthread.php?t=10154

i guess thats the answer then. there is no apple lossless command line encoder in the world.

just for interest i thought it worth adding that i emailed david hamilton and he said he is not giving out the source code of apple lossless encoding at this time. dboweramp and foobar must have paid him for the encoders. and why not - it must have been a big job!
