    6.5.1 Random Mix problem

Although the latest version seems to have cleared up the performance issues with Random Mix it seems to have introduced a bug. I asked SS to prepare a Random Song mix looking 200 ahead and 5 behind and this is what I get:

    A-Ha - Velvet from The Singles: 1984-2004

Baz Luhrmann - a Mulcahy / Sparkling Diamond Caroline O'Connor, Natalie Mendoza & Lar from Moulin Rouge
Billie Holiday - One, Two, Button Your Shoe from All Of Me(FLAC)(oan)
Billie Holiday - Body And Soul from Body & Soul
Billie Holiday - Guilty from Classic Tracks
Blind Lemon Jefferson - Blind Lemon's Penitentiary Blues from Blind Lemon Jefferson

Blues Brothers - Flip, Flop & Fly from Best Of The Blues Brothers
Bob Seger and the Silver Bullit Band - Ship of Fools from Night Moves
Bobby Womack - Doing It My Way from Lookin' For A Love (The Best Of Bobby Womack)
Bonnie Rait - All At Once from Luck Of The Draw
Brian Wilson - Let's Go Away For Awhile from Pet Sounds Live
Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It For You from The Best Of Me
Buddy Guy - Watch Yourself from I Was Walking Through The Woods
Buddy Holly - Words Of Love from Buddy Holly
Buddy Holly - It's Not My Fault from For The First Time Anywhere
Bunny Paul - Such A Night from It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
Carole King - Corazˇn from Natural Woman: The Very Best of Carole King
Charlie Watts - Charlie Watts / I#ve Got A Crush On You from Long Ago And Far Away
Cher - Save Up All Your Tears from Cher's Greatest Hits: 1965-1992
Chicago - Look Away from The Chicago Story
Chicago - Street Player from The Chicago Story
Chris Rea - Bless Them All from On The Beach
Chris Rea - On The Beach from The Best of Chris Rea - New Light Through Old Windows
Chris Rea - Stainsby Girls from Best of

Chuck Berry - Almost Grown from American Graffiti
Chuck Berry - Down The Road A Piece from Natural Blues Album, The : Disk 2 of 2
Cliff Richard - Dynamite from The Singles Collection
Bessie Jackson - Barbecue Bess from Copulatin' Blues
David Bowie - Hallo Spaceboy (Pet Shop Boys Remix) from Best Of Bowie
David Bowie - Sound And Vision from Best Of Bowie
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World from Best Of Bowie
David Gilmour - The Blue: from On An Island
Del Shannon - Hey Little Girl from Greatest Hits
Diana Ross and the Supremes - Baby Love from Simply The Best Classic Soul
Dion - You Showed Me What Love Is from Born To Be With You / Streetheart
Dion - You're The One from Bronx In Blue
    1 2 3 4 5

Anyone else noticed this? I get the same result on a ReadyNAS NV running 6.5.1

Setting the list to 20 does not show up the problem as much but you can still see the way it is going down the alphabet.

I sometimes find that when I select Random Song Mix, I actually get the seletion of songs I selected previously.

After a bit of messing frustraton messing around, I tried selecting another Random mix (I actually used Random Album Mix). I then changed it back to Random Song Mix, and this time I did get a Random Song Mix.

A bit of a bug there I think. It sometimes seemes to take a bit of pursuading to forget the previous plylist and generate something truely random.

Bug has been identified and fixed:

"I think this is a bug with the new faster way of generating the random list.
Each group of items will be added in the order which the perl hash algorithm
    stores them.

Please try tomorrow's nightly or svn after change 11332 this should add the
random items to the playlist in a more random order."

How quickly will there be a Qnap version of it?

Superb response from Infrant - they have released a patch to solve the random mix problem - 6.5.1.2

Edit: But it does not work! Problem still there. On the other hand Random no longer works on the Qnap.

Thanks to triode1 the Random Mix bug has been found and fixed:

"Please try 6.5.1 change 11446 or tomorrow's nightly. This should improve randomness of tracks which are added. Previously we selected a group of tracks randomly, but then performed some functions which resulting in each selection being approximately ordered by the track id. This change attempts to avoid this."

I have tested this on the ReadyNAS and it works properly. Infrant should be releasing an add-on in the next day or two.

This bug is in ALL versions of 6.5.1 up to tonights nightly. Obviously if you have SS running on a PC you can download and install the latest version but if you are on a Qnap you will need to wait for Paul to include the fix.

Actually.....the bug seems to remain. The first 10 songs on a random song playlist appear to be truly random, but as songs are added to the playlist, the randomisation problems that existed previously reappear. The process appears to be almost alphabetical with a preponderance of songs by artists beginning with B and C.
    Could someone please fix this?

Could you turn on d_plugin debugging and post the messages which appear in the log when tracks are added. In the mode where extra tracks are added one at a time, this includes the database id of each track added, e.g:

RandomPlay: Adding track: Blazing Saddles, 13

So you are looking for the number on the end of this line to be non random (if it is not random - it is for me!)

Mine has been running for about a week now and currently my mix looks like this:

Our Lady Peace - Starseed from Armageddon - The Album
Carole King - Sweet Seasons from Natural Woman: The Very Best of Carole King
Ray Charles - Sinner's Prayer (with B.B. King) from Genius Loves Company
Nat King Cole - Unforgettable from The Greatest Hits
Smiley Lewis - Bee's Boogie from Blues & Rhythm
Ella Fitzgerald - Love Me Or Leave Me from Forever Ella
Lotus Eaters - The First Picture of You from AlternativeEighties CD1
Barbra Streisand - Memory from Greatest Hits
David Mcwilliams - The Days Of Pearly Spencer from Decades 60's
Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man from The Best Sixties Album in the World Ever
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman from The Best Sixties Album in the World
Teddy Pendergrass - Come Go with Me from Teddy
Family - Burlesque from Best of Family
Eric Clapton & JJ Cale - Danger from The Road To Escondido
Cliff Richard - I'm Looking Out The Window (Original A Side) from The Singles Collection
Canned heat - On the road again from Natural Blues - Disk 1 of 2
Paul Anka - Eye Of The Tiger from Rock Swings
Michael Jackson - Thriller from Thriller
    Boston - Smokin' from Boston
Kylie Minogue - The Loco-Motion (7' Mix) from Ultimate Kylie
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Empty Sky from The Rising
Fine Young Cannibals - Take What I Can Get from Finest
Little Richard - Rip It Up from 18 Greatest Hits
The Platters - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes from Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
Frank Chacksfield & His Orchestra - Suite From Porgy & Bess from Gershwin
The Jimmy Rogers All-Stars - Ev'ry Day I Have The Blues from Blues Blues Blues

Seems pretty much random to me. How are you organising your music directories as this may have an effect?

Update: Just ran debug and numbers are indeed random.
