Hi Michael,
Just installed your latest version.
I saw the new tab on the extension maintenance page, to download the Slimserver log. I clicked on it and opened a large can of worms.
Slimserver is reporting a number of problems, including not being able to connect to the internet to get any Slimdevices downloads.
Snippet from Slimserver log file:-
I thought I would start by trying to fix the internet problem.

I have not got a local DNS server, so I need to make the FreeNas resolve its host name to IP address. To do this I need to put an entry in the /etc/hosts file.
I tried to do this using the file edit facility in Freenas. Unfortunately it appears not to be able to write to the /etc directory. Allthough the edit appears to work, on the next reboot it is 0 length again.
I had a look at the Freenas forum. There was a guy asking how to set up a hosts file in July 2006, and he never got an answer!
Please can I ask here? How do I write a /etc/hosts file on Freenas?
If I create one on my local pc, how do I move it to /etc?
Btw I put my memory back to 256Mb before doing the v0.3 upgrade.
I deleted all the files in slimnas and reloaded the latest and reinstalled slimnas and slimserver.
I started a softsqueeze session whilst Slimserver was scanning and after about thirty seconds Freenas ran out of swap space, I cannot show you the error, I rebooted before I copied the error.
regards
Patrick

I don't know enough about slimserver! and slimnas
Hi,
Well I worked out how to use ssh. I was very pleased to find that Freenas uses the nano editor, (I hate vi). I put a hosts file in the freenas /etc directory, but no joy. I had a look around the slimnas directoryy and discovered another empty etc directory there.
What is this one for?
Can slimserver do a resolve of host name to IP address itself?
There is a file slimserver.prefs containing host name and allowable hosts, where does this get parsed?
so much to learn, and so many other things to do, (my wife's all electronic Renault has just decided to develop an electrical short and self discharge the battery, setting off the car alarm on the way down. Do you know, disconnecting the car battery doesn't stop the alarm, it has its own built in battery, and the whole shebang is buried in the body somewhere! The neighbours are pi**sd! )
Michael --- ANything I can try and report for you?
regards
Patrick

Out of swap space error
Hi
Here is the Freenas error log entry for the out of swap space error
This is with 256MB DIMM, completely reinstalled V0.3 and Slim 6.5.1 and a full scan with NO SB3 or softsqueeze running:-
(fixed the car, wish the Freenas was as easy!)

Hi Michael,
I was running your 0.1 release, and tried to upgrade to the 0.31 release. I uploaded the two new files, (I kept the old slimserver.tar.gz package the same) and tried to re-install and when I refreshed the browser it just was a bunch of error messages. I tried to install again and no nothing is added to the extensions menu. I may try to re-do from scratch.
Was my method the "preferred" upgrade procedure?

Just the one error now
Hi Michael
I would appreciate some advice here please.
Running Slimnas 0.31, I have posted an error log from today. This is from start-up to playing music. (no scanning):-
As you can see the only error error is the problem of Slimserver resolving the IP address of the update host.2007-02-08 10:12:44.6186 Aysnc: No DNS servers responded, you may have trouble with network connections. Please check your network settings.

2007-02-08 10:12:47.5000 There was an error while checking for updates to SlimServer:
Failed to connect to http://update.slimdevices.com/update...=6.5.2&lang=EN (Couldn't resolve IP address for update.slimdevices.com: Send: Network is unreachable)
The setup here is I have a broadband router, I use my ISP's DNS, I have my internal LAN, Nat'd and firewalled in the 192.168.2.xxx range. I have DHCP running on the router with a pool of 50 available addresses. I have given the FreeNas server a fixed IP address of 192.168.2.52.
As I said earlier I have made a couple of attempts to use a hosts file, but re-reading the error log, I think I may be barking up the wrong tree.
The proble is I do not understand mdnsResponder.
All my other apps on my main pc here can get their required IP addresses resolved by the ISP's DNS servers.
Why is it Slimserver running on FreeNas can't get the required IP addresses?
regards
Patrick

Its an OLD error!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I just found this post:-
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showth...ight=mDNS.conf
dated March 2006... Exactly the same error and nobody ever answered the query.
Looking at the format of his and my mDNS.conf file, I think the syntax may be wrong.
I think, (from long searches in Google) the syntax should be:-SlimServer
_http._tcp
TXT
9000
SlimServer
_slimhttp._tcp
TXT
9000
SlimServer
_slimcli._tcp
TXT
9090
I tried to edit my mDNS.conf, but for some reason it will not allowed to be edited, ( I chanbged the perms but after a reboot it is back to the version with no full stops.SlimServer
_http._tcp.
TXT
9000
SlimServer
_slimhttp._tcp.
TXT
9000
SlimServer
_slimcli._tcp.
TXT
9090
Soo
Is the full stop important?
If so how do I change the mDNS.conf file?
cheers
Patrick

I have not come far enough in the installation yet (only half of the FreeNAS installation yesterday evening) but indeed the documentation/forum seems to indicate a very small partition is created (around 34MB). I will see if I can find any way to change this, but maybe you already have found this out?

Thanks for the great work Michael
I've installed SlimServer on my FreeNAS machine with just one sticking point - I had to reboot the FreeNAS machine in order for the "scan library" function to work. I could browse my music through Slimserver, but the library scan wouldn't "take" without rebooting first.
I'm very happy to be running SlimServer off of my basement FreeNAS machine
Thanks again for all the work you put into software for the Squeezebox

Odd Time Behavior
Regardless of what plugin I'm using for the screensaver, my Squeezebox time is always ahead by 8 hours.
Slimserver is supposed to get the time info from the OS, right?
My system time on FreeNAS is correct, and my system time in the BIOS is also correct.
I'm in the PST (GMT-8), so it would appear that Slimwerver is grabbing GMT instead of my own timezone. How do I change this? I
Is there something simple I'm missing here?
Edit:
To answer my own question, it was something very simple
I just had to disable and then re-enable Slimserver and my Squeezebox grabbed the correct timeLast edited by Steven W.; 2007-02-18 at 12:26. Reason: solution for my problem
