I took a quick pass through this thread - here are some possible omissions (may have been there, but didn't see them):
Brian May
Ritchie Blackmore
Points to my "rock roots" - I always found Brian May's sound quite unique, and I was in a band and our lead guitarist's favorite guitarists were Blackmore and Eddie Van Halen.

Lots of fine guitarists, a whole lot of totally different styles. How cool that i like a lot of them.
Glad to see Richard Thompson on the list, but only three times or so? Greatest rock and folk guitarist of all time, in my opinion. Not a bad record in his entire working life. Surprised to see the Grizzly Man recording mentioned though, not what I'd have considered a high point. I saw him live at a festival in Toronto once, in full-on rock mode -- best concert I've ever seen. Son Teddy is doing ok, too.
So many other fine ones mentioned, I'll second a few:
Leo Kottke, 12-string God.
Martin Simpson, one of the very best folk guitarists about -- love his relatively recent Prodigal Son CD.
Duane Allman, gone more than 30 years, but still the master of southern-style rock guitar. No Duane, no Layla.
Dave Van Ronk, did more for guitar heroism as a modest finger-picker that just about anyone else, active from the 50s through the 00s, sadly gone. It was his arrangement of House of the Rising Son that Dylan stole and sneakily recorded first.
More or less the same basic arrangement of House is used by Shawn Mullins on his fine 9th Ward Pickin' Parlor -- except that it's tarted up considerably. Starts as an acoustic piece with Shawn's excellent raspy voice, but then builds to an electric guitar crescendo before wrapping acoustically. Not sure who the guitarist is (it's not Shawn), but it's a great illustration of rock riffing to a folk classic.
I don't seem to recall seeing Les Paul on any of these lists. Holy Moly, how can that be? And Chet Atkins? One of my favorite all-time guitar recordings is their duet album, Chester and Lester. Graceful mastery on both their parts, Chet having more of the grace perhaps.
Bill Frisell, very fond of him, was listening to his Best of Vol 1 (with his covers of all those folk and Americana things that someone else hated). I love it.
Emily Remler, blazed a jazz guitar trail for women, sadly lost to heroin.
Mimi Fox, took up the torch, is flaming brightly.
Too many to recount, time to stop.

Lordy, I missed Ry Cooder. Frequently mentioned, but I can't let it pass. From playing with the Stones (check out Jamming With Edward, if you can find it) through his lifetime of curating of diverse American styles, through his current more political work (Chavez Ravine, My Name is Buddy, etc), he's the master.

No love, because there are only 10 total guitarists so we can't name everybody (just kidding) ;=}
There are many great guitarist both living and dead, jazz and rock, and on and on. There are even probably a few I haven't heard or discovered yet, so this thread might help!
